Got a 1996 Yamaha golf cart. I use it around the yard.Works great, runs great. Changed the oil today. Put in 5w-50 Castrol Syntec. Now theres a oil light that will come on if oil gets too low, not a oil pressure light, this is a oil level light. Keeps golfers from running the carts out of oil. Anyway this light always comes on when I drain the oil, and has always gone out after I start it with a new fill. Reason I know this is I seldom turn off ignition key, because when you let off throttle it kills the ignition. Only reason to turn off and remove key is to lock ignition.
Problem today is the light wont go out after runnung the cart. All over the yard and down the road a mile , light still on. Motor holds 1 qt. oil is right at the full on dipstick.
What kind of a light system is on this anyway? Any ideas as to why this light wants to stay on now.

Float switch is stuck maybe? I wouldn't know how to get at it. Not familiar with these at all. I'm surprised those babies only hold a qt of oil with the abuse they get!

GOT to be float switch activated. Look on engine block for a single (maybe double) wire going into lower area of engine. could be wires shorted, or switch stuck. If you find something resembling switch remove wires and see if light goes out, motor woldn't even need to be running. If it goes out switch is stuck or defective. I'd try lightly tapping on any wired protrubreances(sp) on engine before getting too deep.

Look on the rear of the engine, next to where the tranny is, on the RHS ( Passenger) there is a little wire that runs to a sensor. It has probably been knocked off the terminal. ( I am assuming it is the Kawasaki engine, 11hp, no?)

Not trying to be lippy here, and I don't know anything about golf carts, but a Kawasaki engine in a Yamaha golf cart?

OK Took pan off bottom of motor , found wire and senser. Unplug wire light goes out. I dont think this senser went to pot just when I changed oil.
Oil cap says one QT. 10w-30 dino oil. Now I put in 5w-50 castrol syntec, full synthetic oil, because I will be running this around yard, short runs in coming COLD weather.
My theary is the light weight synthetic oil is messing up the senser.
NOW COME ON ALL YOU OIL DREWS, CAN THIS BE SO??

I am going to guess that's one of the reasons the oil cap specified dino. Is this the first time you've used synthetic?

Oil cap says 10w-30 SE or SF. Doent say dino only. I have used Synthetic before, cant remember the brand or wt. I believe it was Rotilla.

The reason I asked, and it was purely a (wild) guess, was that if the sensor relies on the oil's conductivity rather than a simple float, using a lower conductivity oil may fool the circuit to be open (mineral base oils have higher conductivity than synthetics).

Whew..

and I was going to guess the float switch slips right through the extra slippery synthetic oil! (kidding of course) I'm thinking this is a mechanical issue. Probably nothing to do with the oil or the kawi engine in that Yami.

Sorry, just got too eager to help. Saw the 1996, and oil light, and I happen to work on one at my work, so just assumed without looking. Again, Sorry.
