Try loosening the gas cap. I once had a mower with a bad gas cap and it wouldn't let air into the tank as the engine consumed the gas. It would pull a vacuum on the tank and stall out after 5 to 10 minutes.

So what you are saying is to loosen the gas cap a little and then drive.

How loose should the gas cap be, should I tighten the cap and then loosen it a half of a turn.

I also took the cap off and was able to press in the plunger.

Well now the thing does not start at all.

But on the bright side I got my walk behind mower going by putting a new coil on it. We have someone in our area called the Mowerman that comes out to your house to fix your equipment. Hopefully I will here from him tommorow.

Well, we got it started and it was running fine, as soon as it started to sputter my Dad loosened the cap and it kept running.

I cannot have my Dad driving around with no gas cap.

What do I do:
1) Get a new cap
2) Blow Compressed air into the cap to loosen whatever is keeping it from breathing.

I should point out that the plunger in the cap works meaning you can push it in and it retracts.

Plugged or partially plugged gas cap vents can be an issue, but you could also have a fuel pump or fuel filter issue. Kohler Commands are ridiculously sensitive to the type/brand of inline fuel filter being used. The somewhat weak vacuum/pulse diaphragm fuel pumps on these engines are not strong enough to pump fuel through some aftermarket fuel filters. I've seen where swapping back to an OEM or quality OPE filter will fix fuel starvation issues on Kohler Commands.

JTK, this machine only has 43 hours on it, so it has the original fuel filter.

We have a compressor, so my Dad shot some air into the tiny holes on the gas cap. He is going to try and mow on Friday or Saturday.

I put a new coil on my Kawasaki walk behind so all is not lost if he cannot use his machine.

This is absurd to have this problem with a Kohler Engine that only has 43 hours on it.

The machine looks so good you would swear it just came out of the factory.

Is there a correct way to blow the gas cap, anyone have any pics as how to do this.

Should I get a new fuel filter, and how do I check the fuel pump, meaning what steps would I have to take to check the fuel pump.

My Dad got the thing started, he cleaned the magnet on the flywheel that had some rust or junk and it starts up and runs fine.

The true test will be tommorow or Wednesday when he tries to mow the yard. A mechanic friend of his recommended this idea of cleaning the magnet on the flywheel.
