Kohler 18" oil

My father lost the owners manual for his Cub Cadet with a Kohler Courage 18" what should I run for oil a 30 or 40 weight? I would like to run Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 that's what I run in my push mower but just not sure on this engine?

My John Deere x300 gets full synthetic 5w30, but that just me.

Is this a new motor or an antique?

If it's new then Kohler typically spec 30 weight oil, usually 10w30. That'll said a lot of folks use some flavor of 40 weight in small air cooled motors.

If it's an older motor I can't say, perhaps someone else will chime in.

Those Chinese Kohlers spec 10W30. If you have 5W40 on hand, that will work fine.
