I have 20 boxes of Mobil 1 tri syn 5w30 and 10w30 , 30-40 quarts of redline 5w30, 10 gallons of amsoil turboformulated sl rated, 20-30 quarts of amsoil 7500 xl oil, 6 quarts of royal purple and some more, my question is i've been stashing oil and gotten most of it for free should I continue using old rated oil? The oils go in a 97 nissan maxima with about 60,000 roughly and a 2003 acura rl 3.5 with 40,000 miles. The maxima is in the rinse state for autorx but the acura is done, in the acura I used 4 quarts of Mobil 1 tri syn and 1 quart of redline plus 5oz initial lc and added 1 oz recently for makeup. The acura oil darkened up considerably I was wondering why since autorx oil came out clean even in rinse phase and this mix got dark in 1000 miles or so, should I dump it? I have 90 % city driven for both cars maxima has Mobil 1 filter which I got for free. The Rl I use whatever is on sale pureone or Mobil 1 considering the wix from fleetfilter. The rl is not a vtec motor and gives bad mpg 15 or so city but 26 or so highway. So what would be an optimum way to go new rated oils or use up what I have and mix in additives? Oci is roughly 4000 for the max and 4000-5000 for the acura both cars have synthetic since second oil change.

The Redline is cleaning the engine on the Acura, that's why the oil is dark, even after AutoRX. Let it go until your next OCI. You can just use up your stash with the 4000 mile OCI's. LC would be the only additive you need, save your money.

I would use up your stash and not be overly concerned. Especially since it meets the specs of your 97.

This raises a good point though. For those of you that brag about how big your oil stash is. What have you really gained when you get to the point that there is better stuff available, especially when you get another car (newer) car that really maybe should have a later API rated oil?

I try not to let myself get too far behind. I still have one oil change worth of SL oil and i would kind of like to move on to SM. At least there is only one more oil change worth.

Clearly the downside of stashing oil. Old oil in old cars and you are all set. Buy a newer car and you are buying oil again.

PS - I am still getting rid of Mobil 1 TriSynthetic!

Would it be smart to mix some sm rated oil with old oil for my acura? I was planning to goto walmart and see if they accept my return I just got to much oil and no space. The good thing is last 6-7 years havent paid a dime for oil. Maybe its best to give some away.

linkman: I wouldn't use it if I were you. If you want me to take some of your hands I'm not far from NYC.
