Hey Guys and gals, need your opinion. I own a 06 Mits Lancer Evo 9 with a stock bottom end, stock trubo, Upgraded cams (280/272's considered "race" cams) upgraded spriings retainers. I was running RP XPR 10/40 since I was running meth injection for a while. I took that kit out and sold it, now running Mobil 1 10/30 EP which I used prior to the meth kit install. My car has roller rockers and I feel that the Mobil 1 10/30 is adequate for my car, but the Evo Forums are ragging on me stating I need more ZDDP to limit valvetrain wear. I was considering moving to Mobil 1 0-40 or possible the Mobil 1 10/30 HM which has slightly more Zinc. Just wanted your opinons. Currently, running 10/30 Mobil 1 EP. Thanks

California is a pretty big place, but [mostly] I don't see what you gain from a 30 weight oil over a 40 weight. I would probably go up (and I run 20 in both my cars).

Why EP? You shouldn't be running a long OCI on that car with any oil.

Mobil xw-40 does sound like a good fit. There are other good 40 weight oils as well.

Stick with the XRP 10W40. Here`s a VOA of it:

TBN: 12.5

Alum: 1

Iron: 2

Moly: 109

Boron: 3

Silicon: 4

Sodium: 3

Calcium: 2709

Mag: 7

Phos: 1034

Zinc: 1741

Flash: 430f

If zinc is what you need, this oil probably has the highest amount, next to Pennzoil GT which they told me has 1800ppm.

I used the EP because I had a case left over just wanted to use it. I change the oil every 3 months or 3000 miles which ever comes first. I also live in the southern desers of CA where summer temps can get to the 120F mark and my oil temps hit 100-110C on daily regular driving. I was using the 10/40 XPR from RP but didn't see the need for a "race" oil in my car even with the mods I have. My car is running 750cc injectors and pulls 360whp on a dyno jet 310 on a mustang dyno, and I use it for ocasional autoX. This site has been a HUGE help for me. But seems "Bob" likes the "thinner is usually better" approach, but for a trubo charged car running a spike of 27psi at WOT I am just being overly cautious. So far 0-40 is the ticket then??

thats the thing. I am not sure if I "need" the extra ZDDP since the car utilizes "roller" rockers not flat tappets. I don't want to spend $15 per qt unless I have to. Not that I am cheap, I just will buy what the car "needs". Know what I mean?

The requirement for under 800ppm zddp only applies to 30 weight and thinner oils with the "energy conserving" status. Most 40 weights will have more.

In your climate, with that car, I would be using a 40 weight and therefor the zddp argument is moot.

Any Gurus wanting to pitch in on this one? My tuner is now telling me to run 20/50 RP best bang for the buck for my application. I think its a liitle much for a DD car. Opinions PLEASE folks...haha.

20w50 is way too thick. turbos thin oil a little but not that much.

try Shell's Rotella T6 full synthetic 5w40

search the forum, theres oogles of stuff on it, the STi guys seem to like it more than anyone.

M1 0W-40 is a great oil and would work very well in almost any car. If you want something thicker M1HM 5w30 or 10w30 are also very good in heat (i run 10w30 HM in ecotec 2.2 right now).

I think that M1 EP 10w30 is also an excellent oil, but it's a waste of money in your case since you run only 3k/3 months on it.

You can always use RP 15W40. A bit thicker than the 10W40,and thinner than the 20W50.

Roller rockers are your saving grace.
There is a big difference from flat tappet types -, and even then you are not in the same league as HP pushrod valvetrains in older V8s.
If M1 0-40 is not just about perfect, then the engine is put together wrong.
I note you are NOT using meth injection anymore.

So would a M1 0-40 be a good choice for my application? 2.0 Turbo Chareged, Warm Climate (summer months) Valvetrain upgrades, but roller rockers, 26-27psi Max spike at WOT. Would the 0-40 M1 be fine?

I just don't really see the need for a 40w oil, even in a warm climate, unless your oil temps are over 100C all day long. Even at 100C that is where most 30w's seem to be in their "comfort" zone. So maybe in excess of 100C for continuous amounts of time would justify the 40w.

I would just feel that even for my car, being turbo charged and pushed every now and then, still doesn't require a 40w. If anything it would be cheap insurance to some degree.

Its a tough call, especailly when oils like RP XPR 5w30 and Redline 5w30 are available. I think for the added cost in oil price, I would save money in fuel comsumption. I have averaged 2mpg more on 30w vs. a 40w in the past. That adds up over time.

I am leaning towards RP XPR 5/30. I do like Redline though, but honestly have no experience with it. I know they are in CA where I am from, and I heard of them in the racing world. But my car has never had an Ester based oil in it before, and I am not sure if that will be a plus or not for my car? I don't know of any Evo owners running Redline, but quite a few run Royal Purple. Mind you, this could just be because RP is available in sotres and redline isn't.

So if you had to choose between Amsoil Dominator 10/30, RP XPR 5w30 or Redline 5w30 for an Evo which would you choose and why?

Im just throwing a feeler out there for advice reasons. Thanks.

Out of those three I would choose Red Line 5w30, but all three of them are excellent oils and you can't go wrong with any of them.

Do you have an oil temp gauge? How much power are you making?

Yes, have an oil temp guage, just going back n forth to work never sees over 100C. On the AutoX course never saw over 100C and ONLY time I ever saw it over 100C was after 3 hrs straight of dyno tuning. That was on M1 EP 10/30.

I am making 360whp/355wtq on the Dynojet, 315/312 on the Mustang Dyno on pump 91. Over 400 on both on E85. I am just sticking to pump 91 for now.

Those numbers was with RP XPR 10/40. I recently changed back to M1 EP 10/30. Changed because I took out my WMI kit. E85 is just so much easier than meth to tune.

I ran the 10/40 XPR and the valvetrain was so noisy. When I switched back to the M1 EP 10/30 the Valvetrain noise was gone. I have done some UOA's of the M1 EP and after 1500 miles of driving BlackStone stated my oil was comparable to an oil with 3000 miles on it. So that tells me the M1 is wearing out our what? I just wanted to use a "race" oil to have a cushion there. A margin of error. I am running a High Flow Cat, not the OEM Cat so high ZDDP shouldn't hurt it. I know the street RP 10/40 has 1200-1300ppm of ZDDP the XPR has more around 1700ppm. Its not a ZDDP issue to me, its just wanting to protect this little 4 banger the best I can.

My next step would be an upgraded Turbo. I am maxed out on power on the stock turbo on 91 pump. No money for that right now, so just looking to keep everything protected the best I can. RP XPR is CRAZY exspensive, but if everyone thinks thats the ticket, then I will get it.

Again, M1 EP 10/30 in right now.

I think rp oil went up from $7.69 to $8.99-$.11.99(0w40). U can get 5w30 or 10w40 XPR for $12 from online site n redline for $9.00 plus free shipping.
I have try 10w40 rp to 0w40 for past 8 months.
I'm on 0w40 rp oil still but next I'll be going with redline bec since rp went up so I be paying .50 cent more for redline so that sold me.

Jeff, since you seem to want to stay with M1, have you thought about their 10w30 High Mileage? It's got a bit more ZDDP than their other oils and a 3.6 HTHS viscosity. It might be a better suit to you than EP 10w30. M1 0W-40 is also on the thin side of 40-weights and it is usually a solid choice.

You might also consider German Castrol 0w30 as it has a 3.5 cP HTHS vis. Any of them will be cheaper than Red Line, Royal Purple XPR or Amsoil Dominator. There's also Amsoil ACD 10w30 and HDD 5w30, two fantastic oils that don't often get the attention they deserve and I believe would work very well for you.

There's a bunch of solid choices out there.

Good luck finding Red Line oil for $9 shipped. Especially the 0w40. With shipping the best price I found was $125 for a case of 12(0w40). If you find it for $9 shipped, post the website!
