Oil-free compressors for the homeonwner are typically direct drive and rather loud and obnoxious while running. Some of the newer designs are better now. My personal experience has been that the oil-free designs can last as long as a comparable oiled, direct drive compressor. Neither of these direct drive (high rpm/loud) types is designed for heavy, continuous use, but will do fine for the average homeowner's compressed air needs and last many years with this type of use. To go up a step in quality, I believe you would need to get a lower rpm, twin cylinder, belt driven air compressor. These are usually rated for continous use (100% duty cycle), and you will able to carry on a conversation next to it while it is running. This has been my personal experience.
