Air Compressor Oil

I just bought a 120 gal 7.5hp V Twin slash oil lubed compressor for my home garage.The manufacturer recommends changing the oil after the first hour,i need some recommendations.The unit stays in 65-70F constant temps year round so cold flow isn't an issue.Is there any benefit to running a synthetic oil in this?Weight?The pump is rated for 30k hours and i would like to get all of that and more out of it.Any recommendations as to OCI?Thanks.

Most reciprocating (piston) compressors use a ISO Grade 100 (SAE 30) viscosity oil. Synthetic's do offer greater protection and lubricant life than conventional oils. Probably the easiest to find will be Ingersol-Rand's synthetic compressor oil. Most TSC farm stores sell, compressor dealers and many stores that sell IR compressors also sell the oil.

Thanks for the replies,we don't have any farm stores or compressor places around my area but the SAE 30 is what the manual says is one option.(IR)I was looking at the Amsoil site and the ISO 100 there is SAE 40 do you think this would be ok?the SAE 30 is not available in 1 quart bottles,i only need 2 quarts.

I would go with the SAE 40. If the compressor is kept at cold temperatures and reluctant to start up, I'd try the the SAE 20. Maybe even a quart of each. I'd like to see the SAE 30 also available in quarts. Don't forget your Amsoil site sponsor.

I think i will go with the SAE 40 the unit is in a heated area so it wont see under 65F.The company i work for has an Amsoil supplier already,we get real good prices because we buy a lot of product.Nothing against any site sponsor but i have no reason not to continue doing business with our long term Amsoil dealer.

I'm in the same situation, I just bought A compressor that needs SAE30 oil, I want to try AMSOIL but the smallest amount they can sell me is 5 Gallons, when all I want is a little bottle. AMSOIL should start making that type of oil in small amounts they are losing business!

I use Amsoil's PCK in my two stage twin cyl. 6.5hp comp.
it's a (ISO) SAE40 weight syn.,good stuff.

they also have other weights too 10w,20w,30w,40w,and 50w,so
take your pick.

Use the 40w then, your not going to hurt anything and it will
protect better in the summer when that compressor is running HOT.

i use the 40w all year around in mine,never have a starting issue in the winter,that synthetic oil flows good in the cold.

You might want to call the manufacturer and ask. Both Campbell Hausfeld and Puma now recomend 10w30 full synthetic engine oil as an alternative to 30 wt compressor oil. In fact, I seem to recall that Puma said the synthetic 10w30 was preferred.

I am going to switch my compressor oil (my space also is unheated) to 0w30 GC Castrol Syntec.

Now, it sound like you have a high dollar unit -- I just have a 3 horse 60gal single stage, so there could be differences and I'd hate to void your warranty.

But I think there is a good chance that there are many alternatives to 30wt oil out there. Call the company and ask.
