Brother bought me a 21 gal, 3.5hp oil lubed air compressor as a gift a few months ago. It sees occasional duty for automotive and household type work. I filled it with regular conventional oil as per instructions but wondering if something else should be used because it can go several weeks between uses. Also how long should I keep the initial fill since it will take months before it has more than a few hours of run time on it?

I use synthetic 5w30 in my Campbell Hausefield and change it once a year. it doesn't get run much but I want to get the moisture out from the humidity.

I like synthetic compressor oil, since the compressor runs cooler when used continuously. I had a hard time finding the IR synthetic compressor oil. Found some Amsoil compressor oil that is sold in quart sizes and have use that for the past 8 years. I changed it out once, 2 years ago and it came out looking still brand new, so I may have wasted 1/2 qt. of good oil. I think the Amsoil is good stuff, FWIW. I would not use engine oil, even synthetic, although I have seen that recommended once by one compressor manufacturer.
Where I worked for 17+ years the only oil used in the reciprocating compressors was motor oil. The compressors wouls be removed from the old vans and put in the new vans.As always the manufactures recommended oils are the best but in real life ......
