help me pick an oil for my 95 psd. i am an amsoil dealer and a huge fan of thier oil, however i have an oil leak than i won't beable to fix until either i build a garage to pull the motor in or get the money (apr $2k) to have it fixed
i was looseing about 4 qts of oil in a week (500 miles)
i now have rotella t in it and haven't lost much, maybe a few drops where i park, and a little more when running, so i will stay w/ a dino oil to help the leak.
i want this truck to last at least 400k-500k (i'm at 150k now) and plan on fixing the leak as soon as i can but it might not be till next year.

i have done 3 analysis w/ rotella (3k-5k), all showing excellent wear (this is what blackstone said) but i read here that this isn't a really good dino oil. i am now leaning towards delvac 1300 or delo 400. i want something that flows really good in cold weather, as i can plug the truck in when i'm hunting and it's 0 degrees. (there's a HUGE difference btwn amsoil 15w40 and rotella when i start it at that temp, and i am not comfortable w/shell in cold weather.)

thanks for any input

thanks

1.)To get 400-500,000 miles out you'll need to install a bypass system like Motor Guard.

2.) Shell Rotella is a GOOD OIL, just not the best.

3.) Run an AutoRX treatment through the engine for 1,500 miles. You have a 50/50 chance of either fixing the leak completely, or lessen it to some degree.

4.) Run Rotella, Delvac, or Delo during AutoRX. Then switch back to Amsoil 15W-40, Delvac 1 5W-40, or Amsoil 5W-30 hdd.

it's leaking from where the dipstick tube enters the oilpan. i used auto-rx last year, before the leak, but i plan on using it again. i tryed to tighten the fitting and also loosen it but i was rusted on, so i'm sure i boogered the o-ring on the other side
thanks

Sounds like a job for JB Weld

I don't think you'll find a lot of difference between dino oils at 0°. You might try Rotella synthetic...not the best but low cost. For the rest of the year, I agree with you...Chevron Delo 400, Mobil Delvac 1300S, or Pennzoil Long Life. You might consider Schaeffer oil...their #700 synthetic blend will be about the same price as Rotella synthetic and (I think) better oil.

Delvac 1300 Super has the better cold flow properties of the inexpensive HDEO's. It is the only one that meets 10W cold flow requirements. This would be my choice in a heavy leaker.

As PSD owner a few comments:

First I'd be wary about adding AutoRX or any other additive to crankcase. The injectors depend on acutating pressure from a high pressure oil pump (using the engine oil). Foaming oil is a problem as well as seal compatability. Is Auto RX designed to operate in 3300 PSI oil pressure fired fuel injectors?

The PSD tends to stay very clean inside due to relatively clean combustion and large crankcase capacity.

To run 400,000-500,000 miles you:

1. Have to be lucky
2. A driving cycle which promotes engine longevity.

3. Maintain engine and catch small problems before they become big ones. Don't let engine overheat, run low on coolant, run with a faulty fuel injector, run with coolant or fuel in the oil, etc. Keep oil changed regularly. Check coolant additive levels regularly. If anything about the sound of the engine changes, investigate.

4. My preference is Delo 400, but any of the oils mentioned in the thread will get the engine out to very high mileage.

I've read of many pickup truck diesels out to 400,000 500,000 miles with nothing more than average or good maintenance.

TPI,

Auto-Rx has no effect on oil foaming in the PSD. I have run 2 full Auto-Rx clean cycles on my 95 PSD and I did not have any problems. I am the original owner and I am still on my original Injectors and injector seals.

I ran an Auto-Rx clean on my 01 PSD when I had 1500 miles on the engine. Again no issues. No foaming or injector seal problems.
