Oil for my 496 BBC

Stupid question here but are you sure it’s the right dipstick? Maybe a shorter dipstick and you’re actually overfilling it? Does the dipstick correspond to like 5-6 quarts on the full mark when you drain and refill? (Only assuming that capacity is 5-6, I have no clue for sure)

See post 37. Next time it’s down a quart I won’t add any oil And see if it continues to drop. The concern I have is the amount of oil in the intake, too much clear oil pooling. Im using PCV 184, have no idea if it’s the correct one or if it makes any difference.

According to everything I can find the capacity of a big block 65 Corvette is 5 quarts, I would be leery of running it much under 4 quarts, so if you do this watch it carefully.

Agree with post 38.

Oil in the intake is a clue, need to figure out how oil is getting there. The very first thing i would do is pull the PCV valve (and breather hose if so equipped) and put vented breathers in the VC, You'll have to cap the PCV port of course. and see if my oil consumption continued as well as if pooling in the intake continued.

Monitor valve covers for oil coming out the breathers.

Results determine next steps...

Maybe try running it with vented oil breather caps and eliminate the PCV valve. If your valve covers don’t have baffled PCV outlets it can suck oil that splashes on the valve. If it’s puffing out of the breathers then you know for certain there is blow by. Ring job. Run a ball hone in the cylinders with a set of Sealed Power moly rings. Good to go.

Here are some pics of the engine. I think there are baffles, how well they work I don’t know.

I love the look! You could get away with that Vette being a 396 425 horse (decal) since Chevy did offer that in 1965. Do you have the big block hood on it? I bet it will pull like a freight train!

I get 1000 miles per quart roughly with my 2002 8.1L. I know it can be better. One fix I have as a winter project is to replace the intake gaskets with an "updated" GM set with the replacement intake bolts. I am hoping this will reduce the consumption.

Yes, thank you, really wish it was a 396, love that engine but getting to love the 496 also. Got the stinger hood with the car, and yes, it pulls great!

That’s the nicest Vette I’ve seen in 30 years. You really have a piece of American automotive history-rolling art that in my opinion is the prettiest sports car-muscle car ever made. Thanks for the photo!

Icing on the cake would be if it's a split window. Even if it's not now, run the Vin number. Lots of guys cut out the split bar for a single window for visibility.
