Oil for LOW mileage 2000 Escort

How's this for a plan. Start out with a 50/50 mix of HM/regular dino. Run it 3k and change to full HM dino. After that go with synthetic HM (hopefully) for many years to come. I've had leaks start from switching to synthetic in high mileage engines in the past, so I'm a little shy about making the change right away. But I am convinced that synthetics are worth the extra money, and do want to go in that direction. I put HM synthetic in my 97 Chevy van with 120K last fall, and it started some leaks. I'm back to HM dino with that one.

But what specifically is HM oil going to do that is so bad? Don't the various brands say it's safe for any engine? Could it mess up the seals some how? I know I'm probably way over thinking this issue, but I'd really like to know at this point, just out of curiosity if nothing else.

While a HM oil won't likely cause harm, it just isn't necessary... Seals mostly start leaking in higher mileage vehicles due to wear on its lip or the metal sealing surface, at 10K mi your vehicle will have neither of these conditions...

What's uprising here is all the "BITOG experts" that are agreeing with the HM oil when usually the consensus is, if it isn't leaking you don't need it... Modern seals deteriorate with heat and usage, again this vehicle has neither condition... I firmly believe in the HM oils at 100K mi or so(basically as recommended)leaking or not but then apparently I'm in the minority...

Do you have information on how each HM oil is formulated? If so please share.

With as many miles as you are going to be putting on it I'd go for a good synthetic so you don't have to change it as often. At 1500 miles a month you'll be at 9,000 miles if you change it twice a year. I'd try Amsoil if your budget allows.

Looked at a youtube video on that. Too much work just to be on the safe side. Too expensive to have it done by a GOOD shop-which is the only kind I'd consider for that kind of job. It's SOHC, so non-interference. I'll change it early, but not now.

There were two types of 2.O used. The SOHC one is in my car and is non-interference. The DOHC Zetek was the optional one, and it's interference. Wish I had the Zetec, really, because the SOHC one has major problems with dropped valve seats, resulting in extensive internal damage.
