Very true. Which is why engine DESIGN is important as well, which I'm sure is what you are touching on here.
 
But how does all this relate to this one instance in which the OP is describing what could very well be an oil related failure? It's not a Corvette. The engine is completely different, and the combustion pressures must be extremely high. Seems like the obvious answer, whether it turns out to be the right one, is to use the "toughest" oil you can get, measured IMO in HTHS.
 
I think hp per cylinder would be more important for determining stress than hp per liter.
 
What oil does the car come with? You never mentioned what viscosity. That would help.
 
I have no idea what oil Tomei recommends, although he is using Eneos and I believe it's because Tomei recommends it. But like a few people are saying, you can do better with stuff that you don't need to import.

He is now talking about putting the car in the 600-700 hp range. I think he's nuts. I will ask what grade of oil he's using. He confessed that he thinks he may have down shifted early and pushed the engine past the 8500 redline - just a little. He also believes that because he was using "only" 94 octane fuel that day, that caused the damage as well.

He said the oil pressure gauge was just a little above the peg - very low but the "light didn't come on." I don't even know if the car has a light for low oil pressure. Apparently these cars are notorious for low reading oil pressure gauges, but I wouldn't have done a high boost, redline pass with low oil pressure.

I wonder if the oil didn't get a little thin with all the heat?

What is HTHS? Something about shear strength?

HTHS is High Temperature/High Shear viscosity. It is measured at 150 degrees C at a shear rate that causes viscosity index improvers to lose most of their function. Consequently it is a very good test of the physical toughness of the oil - film strength - under challenging conditions.

Agreed. Which makes sense. Hence the beefyness of Toyota's bottom-end on the Supra. Cummins's bottom-end on the ISB.....etc.
 
I know of several TT Z32 guy`s who`ve suffered from spun bearings while tracking their cars using a 10W30. Most TT Z32 builders recommend either a 15W50 or a 20W50,not sure about the Skyline motor though. I`d get on a Skyline forum and do some research.
 
Maybe Eneos 0w50? They seem to like that oil over there.

New Nissan GT-R is factory fill with Mobil 1 0w40 (really 0w30)
