Oil for cold weather LS1 engine

Changing over to a different oil after being on one kind for awhile is known to cause some initial oil consumption. Give it another go or two before you bail to be sure.

My vote would be for some M1 5w30 HM, great oil! If you wanted something to protect even colder than that, then M1 0w30 would fit the bill easily. If you could afford it though, Red Line would be awesome though. :P

For winter, concentrate on the cold starting abilities of the oil, and forget about any extra use or wear with any oil.

Lower oil pressure and some oil use is normal with thinner oils.
Going from zero to 1 1/2 qt use seems high to me. Try someone else's oil.

If you are mainly concerned with cold weather statup flow, I would go with the previously suggested Amsoil SSO 0W-30, or Red Line 0W-30, or 5W-30 (what I use in the winter, since it has NO added pour point depressants, nor viscosity index improvers).

The Amsoil HDD 5W-30 Series 3000 is also a VERY good, STOUT, high TBN oil, which is highly resistant to washdown/fuel dilution which is more common in cold winter temps/short trips.
But it IS thicker than ALL of the above at 40 and 100 degree centigrade engine temps.
