Hi guys. Just bought my wife an 04 Passat 1.9 TDI last Saturday. I'm looking through the owners manual, and the are VERY adamant about using only a synthetic 5W40, or if unavailable, a 5W30 oil with VW-505-01 specification. I have never seen this on any high quality synthetic I have looked at I don't think. Does someone know what oil has this spec? Thanks.

The dealer network sells the Castrol 505.01 specific oil and you can also buy Motul 505.01 oil in the USA. Many companies make a 505.01 oil but not many sell it in North America. I have heard that Elf also sells this oil in NA but I have not seen it as of yet.

Congratulations on the purchase of a very nice car!

Oops... Didnt see the 505.01.

Maybe you can find a Auto Parts store that stocks (or can get) Castrol Syntec 5W-40 for you. This is likely going to be the cheapest oil that meets these specs.

The new Amsoil 5w-40 I think would be a great choice. It's rumored to use new chemistry (High-base amine antioxidants & over based calcium carbonates) in the base oil blend.

To the best of my knowledge nether Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 nor Mobil Delvac 1 / Truck & SUV 5W-40 meets VW 505.01. I think their additive package is to robust.

It is true, neither D1 nor Rotella T meet the 505.1 spec. It is pretty disapointing. But Motul's 505.1 oil seems to be pretty good.

The Amsoil 5W-40 is NOT for the VW PD engines. It does not meet VW505.01 specs. There is no oil currently available from Amsoil that they recommend for the '04 model year TDI VW's.

FWIW....

If I owned one of these PD motors, I'd run the Castrol 505.01 oil in it for 10,000 miles. Then I'd switch to the Amsoil 5w-40 and monitor it with oil analysis. I'd initially test the oil every 3000 miles with the first batch I ran. Once I confirmed the wear rates were normal, i'd do a check every 10,000 miles as I would with any new engine.

I can find NOTHING in the viscometrics or additive chemistry of the VW 505.01 rated oils I've tested that makes them unique. I think this is a spec that is driven by emissions considerations, ie these oils have slightly lower additive levels that CI-4 rated, synthetic diesel oils.

Ferrari,

I think you want the extra oil film thickness of a 40wt in the PD engine, mainly due to the cam driven injectors and the increased pressures between lubed parts in the valvetrain. Having said that, there are VW 506.01 rated, 0w30 oils being sold in Europe for PD equipped engines....

The Amsoil AFL would be fine.

It may be fine but you would be out on your own if you used it and VW 'proved' that it was the cause of your problem. Amsoil will NOT warranty it like they do other oil/engine combinations. I do not know of any Amsoil dealer that would be willing to recommend it either. I surely wouldn't.

You must use a synthetic 5w-40 oil that meets VW 505.01 in the TDI PD or the warranty will be voided. Period.

This requirements limit your oil options in the US. I've only seen two choices so far. Castrol Syntec and Motul.

Syntec is at your local stealership, Motul can be bought at http://www.vwparts.com .

I will use Elf Excellium DID 5W-40 in my sister's 2002 TDI PD. I hope it's an actual 100% synthetic as opposed to Castol and Motul which are semi synthetic...

the amsoil 5w40 does not me vw spec 505.01 for 2004 tdi.
