Oil for a noisy Ford 2.3l Ranger Engine

I would almost suggest a 40 weight. seems like youre in a warm enough place for it. But im sure a 30 weight will work too.

Give PYB a try!

* just noticed the year. do you have any warranty regulations to follow with your oil choice? You might have to stick with the spec'd weight if you ever have to make a warranty claim. My .02

warranty mileage is up in about a week. The recommendation is 5w20 but I think I 'll try 5w30 and see. It's lifter and valve train noise so hopefully that will help. Thanks

I would run a synthetic that might clean up the top end and see what happens. I would recommend PP 5w20 or 5w30.

Have you used a stethoscope to isolate where the noise originates from (injectors, etc)?

I have noticed once you get up past 100K,those Ranger/Mazda 2.3 engines get a very noisy lower end.Sounds like rod knock.Very un-Japanese-like....

I would take it in and complain about the noise before the week is up, it may or may not have a problem that is covered.

Not all of NC is as warm as you think. The mountains are as cold as Indiana right now. Where as Wilmington is a very mild climate that gets below 32 just a few times a year.

I'd do some more research on that noise issue. Those engines have an intake manifold with an internal air flap of sorts. Kind of an adjusting mechanism that regulates the airflow into the engine. Sorry, I can't think of the exact term for it right now. But when that electronically controlled part goes bad it makes a noise thats often confused with lifter noise. There are articles all over the web about it.

you may find out the noise is the injectors, I have a 2010 Ranger with the 2.3 engine, and I have had 5W-20 AND 0w30 in it, no change in the sound of the engine.

Any Shell oil should quiet it down. QSGB, PP and also the Rotella T5/T6 have worked well for me in the past with these engines. The Rotella was by far the quieter oil. I did see a small MPG hit with the T6.

I see you have the MC filter so that should not be causing the noise.

As someone else mentioned, it could also be the intake flapper valve but those usually don't go bad until 100,000+ miles, and the noise will reveal itself at idle speed for awhile before migrating to all rpm's.

Also don't confuse the noisy fuel injectors for oil related noises. If this is the case run some Chevron fuel injector cleaner with a tank of name brand premium and go do an italian tuneup on the highway.
