Oil for 328 BMW ?

Hello,

What oil can I use for new 328 ?

LL-01 is spec SM ...

Should I stick with BMW synthetic from dealer ?


From BMW website:

Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0w30 ( Never saw it in Canada )
Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40 ( Canadian tire has it .. but car is specced for 5w30 )
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5w30 ( Never saw it in Canada )
Valvoline SynPower SAE 5w30 ( Again I don't think that its available in Canada )
Use only oils with an API rating of SM or higher.

Personally I would go with the Mobil 1 0w40. It's thinner than most 40 wt oils so I don't think that would be a concern. I use it in my GTO and I might use it in my Jag S-Type V8 when I finish off my supply of 5w30.

I would use the Castrol you mentioned as well, but only some of the Autozones carry out here and I can get Mobil 1 0w40 at Walmart for $6.67 even when there are no oil specials, whereas the parts stores charge $8.49 a qt for both Mobil 1 and Castrol.

What does your manuel recommend? Just do what they recommend...

If it recommends an 0w40.....then Mobil 1 would be my choice.

If you can get the Mobil 1 0w-40, use it with confidence!

Here is what I see in the 2011 328I US owners manual about oil:


Gasoline engine
Preferred: BMW Longlife-01
BMW Longlife-01 FE
Alternatively: BMW Longlife-98

Approved oils belong to the following viscosity
classes: SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40
and SAE 5w30.
Alternative oil types
If approved oils are not available, you can use
quantities of up to 1 US quart/1 liter of another
oil with the following specifications:
API SM or higher

I've had great luck for the past 40k miles with German Castrol 0w30 in my wife's car with the M54 engine. Pretty sure you have the N52 engine, so not sure you'll have the same luck I've had. There are a lot of Bimmers out there with Mobil 1 0w-40, though.

If you are paying in USD I'm sure they will allow time payment or Lay-By - Ha Ha..........

The car is not spec'd for 5w30. It is spec'd for LL-01 and that includes a number of different grades. Mobil 1 0w-40 will certainly do the job just fine. There are also some Pentosin, LubroMoly, Motul, and Total oils out there that meet LL-01 spec, but I'm not sure what their availability is in Canada. Out here in the US they're mail-order only for the most part. Can't beat Mobil 1 0w-40 when it comes to local availability, but there isn't anything wrong with the BMW (Castrol) 5w30 oil either.
