Oil for 2022 Gladiator with 3rd Gen 3.0L EcoDiesel

chrystler had issues with the ecodiesel murdering rod bearings IIRC due to incorrect spec oils being used. any oil that carries the certification called for in your user manual should suffice. people here love the quaker state euro 5w-40 and the castrol.
Yeah, don’t pull up with Rotella T6 receipts in your maintenance log and expect to get warranty coverage… 😳

Thanks SubieRubyRoo.

That brings up a valid point: if I run Motul X-Clean 5W40 GEN2 in this EvoDiesel and need to make a warranty claim, does this oil meet the mfg’s specs? I didn’t see the MS-12991 Chrysler spec listed for that oil…so could they deny warranty work saying I used noncompliant oil? Not saying the Motul oil isn’t as good BTW so there is no misunderstanding.

Motul will be better oil. But won’t have that specification. Use PPE 5W40 during warranty, then move to Motul to extend life of DPF.

FCA was recommending T6 at one point.
It was crappy bearings and 5W40 was band aid. They sacrificed life of DPF so that bearings don’t fail during warranty. Once SAPS catches up with DPF, car is out of warranty.

orignally the ecodiesel was lugging the engine and wrecking the main bearing. They eventually went through a few changes to spec and finally came out saying to just use T6. There were a lot of engines grenading around the 40k mile part. Their fuel efficient thin oils weren’t cutting it. T6 became the best thing I ever ran in my ecodiesel and 3.0 lion (Land rover) diesel. I tried the Land Rover oil, mobile 1, the FA4 Ford oil, and Rotella t6. It was very obvious how well the T6 worked compared to the others.

Curious… I’ll have to dig through the forum again. Pretty sure there was a thread on here that said T6 was causing a bunch of the EcoDiesel rod bearing failures. Glad it worked for you 👍🏻

Here’s part of the thread. @RDY4WAR had some pretty interesting info and may be able to add more here.

Platinum Euro in Wal Mart is L 5W30. Maybe they have Euro 5W40 in some locations or online.
That engine, if designed properly, should actually used L 5W30, but because there was an issue with bearings they went ACEA A3.
Gen3 should not have those issues, but who knows why they did not switch back to C3. Maybe not to further confuse owners, and especially dealerships.

This is the oil spec for the EcoDiesel from the owners manual. Note the highlighted text. The way I read this is any 5w-40 oil that is labeled SN or SP with the API donut meets the spec. Agree or disagree?

I ask because the Motul C3 recommended above has the SP approval with label so maybe it wouldn’t invalidate the warranty? At $60/5 Liters on Amazon, it’s not cheap (QS Euro is $23/5 qt at local Walmart).

Yeah, it is more expensive. Your call.
Using QS will shorten DPF life. How much? Not sure. 50,000-60,000 miles? WHo knows.
On other hand, if 3rd generation does not have bearing issues, after warranty, you could move to C3 API SP oils 5W30 that have high HTHS like Mobil1 ESP 5W30.

Hard to believe they recommend gasoline engine oils for a diesel. Doesn’t make sense. The earlier generations requirements were upgraded to diesel 5-40 or 15-40.
None of those specs listed are petrol or diesel specific oils.

I haven’t seen a petrol or diesel only oil for

You may well find an oil for commercial diesels that is only for diesels

Thats not the way oils are in Europe

The VM diesel is relatively robust and the 3.0 V6 is better than the older 2.5 and 2.8 diesels as far a reliability goes.

Regarding the Chevron Delo 400 XSP, more specifically my question is…is the API-CK4 rating similar to the ACEA C3 rating?

A similar CK-4/SN oil that is less expensive…but I need to find out if the CK-4 rating is similar to C3.

I’ve found a cheaper source for the Motul 8100 X-Clean Gen2 5w-40 that now makes it an option.

Anyone have a link UOA for this oil used in a Diesel engine? How do the results look? The few I’ve found were from gas engines and the viscosity dropped off quickly. I would particularly like to see results from the EcoDiesel engine.

M1 TDT is great oil, with a long history of excellent results.

But is it MS-12991 approved? No.
If I read the manual correctly, the only requirements are:
- 5w-40 viscosity
- oil with the API donut rated SN (or higher).

I think the requirement may include CJ-4, which is an API diesel spec. I've seen some manuals state either CJ-4 or CK-4.

At least my owner's manual states: "5W40 synthetic engine oil...that meets the manufacturer Material Standard MS-12991 and the API SP engine oil category is required."

I posted a pic of oil recommendation from a 2022 Gladiator above…no mention of a CK-X spec, only SN/SN+/SP

That bearing failure I believe was a motorcycle, I know nothing about that. I had the original ecodiesel in a ‘14 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Unlike the manuals posted here they did the same thing BMW is doing now and “recommended” lightweight oils. The ED kept have low mileage failures and they started to loosen their oil requirements till eventually they agreed you could use regular oils.

I had also done a Greendieselengineering tune on ECU and transmission. This made it drive WAY better and actually saved the engines. They found the engine/tranny shifted too early and was lugging the engine causing main bearing failures. I believe that issue was addressed later on but the tune moved the shift points and it ran much better. I did UOAs of mine and didn’t see anything supporting what they mentioned in that thread.
