What would you recommend for a 2001 Chrysler Sebring with the infamous 2.7l DOHC v6? It has 67K and I have found some crud in the oil when I drain it. I am now using Mobil 1 5w30, and I don't know the OCI history prior to 62K, but I found a Walmart sticker. I'm considering Rotella 5-40 or Mobil 1 5w40 as I live in hot South Carolina. Thanks

First, you should Auto-rx the engine if you think it has sludge. Second, I would run a 30wt oil with a high ester content. I would use Redline, Synergyn. An alternative would be to use a 30wt diesel oil such as Amsoil S3000 or 30wt Rotella is you can find it.

Also take a look under the hood and check the smog plumbing. Replace the pcv valve and if there is a filter between the crankcase and the air filter system, get that one, too. When you do the ARX, buy a case of oil at someplace like Costco or an oil jobber, and some good filters like a Purolator prem plus. Then pick you favorite oil when done. It's a bit of work, but it's the right way to go, that is, start out with a clean motor and good oil.

You're at the typical danger age for this engine. Check the upper end. Double ARX it ASAP. Thereafter any good full synthetic at a slightly shortened OCI will be fine. Avoid dinos and warranty intervals with this engine.

Everything posted here is good info...

change the PCV valve often. Its cheap.

Run an auto-rx interval.

My roomate's 1.8T GTI had a tiny bit of crud under the cap. I think he used whatever jiffy lube sold.

We've changed since to Mobil 1 0w-40, and its gone away (it wasnt caked on, the crud was loose), and the engine is staying clean.

Id go with Mobil 1 10w30, or 0w or 5w-40. The 0w-40 isnt as shear stable, so it may cause formation, but since Ive seen good results in my roomate's GTI, you might give it at least a thought...

Id run LC in it after youve done your auto-rx intervals.

Redline is a good option for sure! But, at 5000 mile OCIs, its pretty $$$$$. You might consider blending in 50/50 redline/m1 or something liek that, but Id highly suggest you use Terry's services to ensure that the resultant oil is still doing a good job in your engine.

Good luck!

All good info. Thanks. I changed the pcv valve right when I got it, and it was clogged and not functioning. I just can't believe how dark M1 has gotten after only 3000 mostly highway miles. I also have never seen crude-like dirt come out of an oil pan, even on cars with twice the mileage. I hope M1 will clean this out gently before TSHTF. So if you had to choose Mobil 1 10w30 or 5-40? Yeah...all we have here is Walmart.
