Oil filters without silicone ADBV for long OCI

How important is a silicone ADBV for long OCI? I have several Bosch OE oil filters that have the regular rubber ADBV and plan to run them for 10k miles OCI using GC.
Are these OE filters up to it?
 
If your filter points down it doesn't matter. Which way is your filter mounted to your engine?
 
It's not. Most long drain filters are also marketed as premium filters and as such have a silicone ADBV, but nitrile doesn't seem to have any problems with long drains. Silicone's main advantage is in extreme cold, and it does have a better seal... though in my garage during the summer a nitrile adbv will keep the filter full for a month.

I'm not sure who would make a Bosch over there, here it would be purolator buy it's very possible a european or asian manufacturer would make them there.

Please clarify "points down"....
 
The filter says made in Indonesia.
The filter is mounted at the bottom of the engine with the inlet/outlet holes facing up. Does that qualify as point down.
My concern is the high ambient temps and hot oil temps wearing down the ADBV. Kinda like how rubber wipers don't last for long in Malaysia weather. Not sure if it's the UV or heat.
 
The hole up is what CTC is calling "points down" where obviously the filter doesn't need an ADBV to stay full, gravity will do it. There is also a column of oil above it that this isn't necessarily the case for.

Obviously higher temps quicken most reactions and probably will on the nitrile gasket. But, they would on a silicone one as well... so while we do have a potential problem a silicone valve won't necessarily do any better. Really, I wouldn't worry too much about this. Most of the oxidation of the valve probably happens while it sits on the shelf anyway. There aren't common reports of these valves failing, fwiw.

Yes that is what I meant and as bepperb stated, this means you don't need an ADBV at all so it doesn't matter what material it is made of...

Absolutely untrue, I have no idea how this old wives tale hangs on for year after year! What you need the ADBV for above all is to keep oil from draining out of the passages in the upper block that usually lube the cam and lifters. The orientation of the filter has no bearing on whether or not oil will drain down from these upper passages thus causing them to have to be refilled before the cam and lifters are lubed.

If the oil filter is full, how can more oil drain into it?
 
Besides the ADBV keeps oil in the filter from draining out so how does that accomplish what you're describing?
 
Depending on the location of the filter in relation to the oil sump you may need a back-check valve. Syphoning can occure from the filter amd oil passages to the sump. If the manufactures OEM filter has a valve, then use a filter with one.

Think of the filter as a short piece of pipe with a ADBV on one end. If the valve does not leak everythng is ok. If the valve leaks the oil drains down from the cam passages, through the filter (no matter what its orientation) and back to the oil pan. This leaves the filter full but the passages empty. They then have to be refilled before the cam is getting oil. If the valve works well the oil cannot drain through the filter and the passages remain full, waiting for the next startup, so the oil is immediately supplied to the cam and lifters. Kapish?
 
I think for a long OCI 7500+ miles a Silicone ADBV (NAPA Gold, Fram Xtendedguard, PureONE etc..) will be better due to a lesser chance of the ADBV hardening with use and time.

I am not sure if a Champ M1, or K and N have a Sil ADBV I have never used them.
 
It has been a long time since I ran a filter over 3 months. All the ones I have cut open had a nice, soft nitrile ADBV. Usually when you shut the engine down, it oil and valve is warm and would seal even if it is stiffer when cold. I think a silicone ADBV is just bling.

+1 Filter orientation aside, extended OCI's would benefit with silicone adbvs. Silicone remains pliable longer. Nitrile good IMO, ~5k/6m OCI or less.
 
There is no 100% OEM holding spec for any engine. If this were the case OEM's would clearly state that ANY nitrile ADBV would be PROHIBITED if a silicone ADBV was fitted.


The purpose of the ADBV is NOT to stop back flow. It's to slow and control the RATE of backflow.

Ever see any TBS's or WARNINGS about using a PClassic? Ecore? Our infamous orange can (some Cummins engine apparently did -but probably for other reasons)????

Wonder why the FL820S is an "S"? FL400S is an "S" Customer complaints.

I can tell you that when my son used other than an FL820-S, (ie. nitrile adbv) on his 4.6L Explorer he had a start up rattle. Gone with the 820-S. Perhaps some of the the FoMoCo products are more sensitive to backflow.

You're correct. But why does Ford offer a silicon ADBV and NOT INSIST that ANY filter put on a modular be constructed with a silicon ADBV?? Why isn't there a BIG STICKER in your owners manual about it? Why isn't there an EXCLUSION from warranty if you don't use one?

..because it's not there to prevent damage. It's not there to do anything other than quiet customer complaints.


This is not to say that a silicone ADBV won't help keep your filter fullER/less empty.
 
I hear ya and understand. Ford doesn't view the rattle as a warranty/engine damage issue.

More of an irritating noise, aesthetics issue.
