Oil Filter Wrench Used........

I use either a plier-style wrench for large filters with easier access, or my trusty Lisle import filter wrench for smaller-medium sized filters in tougher to reach spots.

^^^^ I have one of those too now. I tried it out yesterday and love it. It slips on easily and really grips.

i have various filter tools, but for the most part i use filter pliers or by-hand to take them off, and by-hand to put them on. i guess it all depends on how accessible the filter is, etc.

for those who like the fram grippy filter feature but dont like to use fram, buy a case of you favorite filter and then dip the ends into Herculiner (or similiar) product. you could even roll the ends in some anti-skid grit (or clean sand) for extra grip, etc. but its just quicker/easier/less expensive to use a filter socket to put filter on/off.

as for the screwdriver bit, yeah, had to do that once on my brother's ford truck. he cranked it down so tight it was like the rubber gasket fused itself to both sides. wound up torqing and crushing the filter in an effort to get it off. finally had to finess it with a rubber strap wrench right at the base.

This thread is motivated me to dig out the filter wrenches I've collected over the years. It includes:

2 steel band wrenches (large and small) with fixed handles
2 steel band wrenches (large and small) with pivoting handles
2 (large and small) cup wrenches
1 Fram branded claw wrench
1 Craftsman pliers wrench
1 small Craftsman rubber strap wrench

The cup wrenches fit both the ST16 and ST3600 filters on my Jeeps and several previous cars I've owned. Unfortunately, I can't maneuver the small cup wrench and ratchet wrench extension in my Liberty's limited space.

My small Craftsman rubber strap wrench is quite handy for removing the Liberty's filter from very, very tight quarters.

Any wrench of the proper size can remove the filter from the cavernous space available with my 4.0l Jeep Cherokee!

Now if I could only find my large and small oil can spouts. Then I'll be ready when they finally retire plastic bottles and bring back good old easy-to-stack oil cans! When that day comes, a man can begin to acquire a real oil cache!

Yes I have done that. Too cheap to buy something.

I have 3 channelock oil filter pliers, 2 lisle spring loaded things, a chain wrench and some other stuff, but when dealing with a Nissan KA series engine or VG series engine in a pickup truck, the screwdriver trick is the only thing that works.

You've inspired me!

One swivel handle steel band wrench
Seven different cup wrenches
One slip joint filter pliers
One vice-grip like locking filter pliers
Two nylon band wrenches
One, two-fingered, self adjusting filter removal socket

...and...Several big, long screwdrivers and hammers if I have to get violent.

You have quite an arsenal!

It would be great for future shadetree machanics if they could still set a long screwdriver next to the filter and take swing with a hammer without breaking something!

I hope that my grandsons will have cars with oil filters AND there will be enough room to crawl underneath!

Really? I used to have a Nissan KA and I used a plier-style wrench to get the filter off before.

I got mine from Amazon. It's too big for the small Honda filters, IIRC.
