Oil Filter w/ 5w-50 in 460 EFI

I started the Dana 80 Differential yesterday. What a mess…. There was orange sealant on it, the bolts were over tighten, and it’s just going to take time. I’m at it again today. Cleaned and painted the cover. Still need to clean the inside of the Diff. Btw, brake cleaning is working great, thank you for the advice! :) Here are some pictures:

Wow!! That’s Beautiful Man! Is that the motor named “The Thunderbird”? Or maybe that was the 332….or originally it was a 332 and you’ve done a lot of work too it haha. I think that’s what they used to race with too. So much history in the FE’s, such a cool engine. Congrats!

What’s the lucky vehicle are you going to put that bad boy in?

The orange RTV indicates that someone has been into the Dana 80 before. When I was in high school I worked at a service station that did light duty mechanic work. They used that red RTV on everything. What a mess! Red (high temp) is for high temp applications, like exhaust Gaskets and the like.

Anyway, looking good. Get it all cleaned, sealed, and filled with your choice of gear oil.

Let's start with the basics of common sense here ...

You don't need a giant "high flow" filter, especially for a 1k mile OCI. Use any decent FL1A you can get, just about anywhere. As for the lube, well, what was wrong with the 10w-30 it was spec'd for? I'm sure you believe the thicker lube is better; that's a common mental phenomenon. But do you have any tangible proof that a decent filter and normal oil weren't doing the job correctly? Any UOAs or PCs to show a baseline and upgrades?

Sweet Car!

I know where you are coming from. I know how to work on cars and such but I am still learning about the math and oil formulas for the interiors but with learning about the 460, the flat-tappet cam needs more ZDDP in it. I looked at 5w-30 and 10w-30 UOAs and they seemed alright. Then I saw the Mobil FX2 Advanced Synthetic 5w-50 UOA and I thought that fit the engine better in my opinion but no one really runs this oil. In fact, There are only a couple forums out there on 5w-50. So I was very curious why, that’s why I made the post too see what everyone else is using for my new respect on Big Blocks. There must be a reason I guess… but I usually get is “The Manual Says…”Which is fine and they are right. Proof? No, just the virgin UOA from the Mobil 5w-50 but I’m going to send out my used oil and I’ll post it in the future.

Haha most prolly won’t care of it but my K&N SS-4007 Washable Oil Filter came today. Got it New and a great price. It might go in the 460 or my 5.3l Avalanche LTZ….. very well made. Suppose to have less oil flow resistant.

Oh jeez! What a mess that would have been! The orange was bad enough lol. Yes, I thought the same thing once I saw the sealant that it has been changed long ago.

I got the inside cleaned up, torqued the cover bolts to 40FT Lbs and filled it with Valvoline 75w140 Full Synthetic. All Done!

A rich running carbed engines needs a tune.... now fuel washing is another issue.

But to say a 460 is dirty when it had a carburetor is a misnomer. What difference is a 460 from a GM 350 or 454 with a carb? None.
