Earl’s Washable/Reusable Oil Filter

Has anyone used or seen a Earl’s Professional Products Oil Filter? It’s Washable/Reusable. I talked to Earls (Holley) employees but no one seems to know anything. I’m assuming it’s from the 90’s or late 80’s
It’s built very well and I really like this oil filter! Im looking to use it on my 1995 Winnebago Vectra 33Ft F53 7.5L 460 V8

you may wash all the old oil out BUT much of the trapped metal
debris is still there. A gimmick for gullible folks.

That’s not really accurate. If you don’t clean it right maybe….
Most of them have a strong magnet inside the filter that collects any tiny metal grains and having a spare filter media makes it faster to change out but not needed. Soap and Hot Water does the trick and then I use my ultrasonic.
I’ve been using the reusable oil filters for 10 years now and don’t see it as a gimmick. It’s treated me very well.
 
This one is a Speedmaster PCE298.1002
Washable/Reusable Oil Filters I use. You can see the magnet on top of the filter media. I replace the O-ring gaskets every year in the spring. Just wanted to give some pictures for those who never seen them before.

I’m still hoping to find someone out there that use or used the Earl’s Oil Filter.

Ferrous metal grains only however. As noted the efficiency is very low on these filters, and as RooflessVW states "flow" is not an issue in any regular filter.

The difference in these metal filters is that they're only going to catch the particle size they're rated for and higher because it is a uniform mesh of a defined size. There's no variability as there is with synthetic or natural fiber.

I'd be very surprised if multi pass efficiency was any higher than initial and if it any particles smaller than nominal were caught at all.
 
Metal mesh filters are in use in engines more valuable than Dr. Haas' fleet and I've changed and washed more than I can count but that's a different application.

I wouldn't say that they're harmful in a road engine but I don't think there's any benefit.
 
Yeah, they are usually something like that. The oil flow is suppose to be better. I’d much rather have better oil flow at 40 microns, than less flow at 20-22 microns. But that’s just me.
It really just means there is less delta-p across the oil filter, but that doesn't mean there is less flow. There is only one condition in the oiling system when there is "less oil flow" going to the engine, and that is when the positive displacement oil pump is in pressure relief. It's pretty rare for any oil pump to hit pressure relief when the oil is at full operating temperature and the engine isn't at or very near redline RPM.

This style of filter might be better suited for an all out racing vehicle that uses thick oil, has a high volume output oil pump and is near redline a lot of the time.
 
And where wear is not the primary concern.
Could be ... but highly dependent on the OCI. If that screen filer filters out everything 40u and above, and the OCIs are pretty short (like 3000 or less), then there level of particulate should be acceptable.

With my Avalanche, Solstice GXP, Jeep Liberty and now the F53 Motorhome. My schedule has always been oil changes beginning of Spring, middle of Summer and late Fall. The Motorhome will honestly prolly get one once a month. The Solstice is the only one without a reusable oil filter since it uses a cartridge filter. So far my schedule has worked for me and the vehicles I have had but I am always open to any ideas.

I prefer the toilet paper element filters myself. Always have a replacement on hand.
I think I saw something on that very brief. I didn’t like that you had to make room for the hardware you had to install But glad it works for you man. It’s a interesting idea.
