I see posts about people bumping up to larger filter sizes and such. Will any oil filter fit any car as long as the threads and circumference match up?

That`s exatctly what I wonder about when I read those threads. Are oil filters "tailored" for the cars they`re designed for?

That is a loaded question . Yes , oil filters have certain specifications for each engine , but there is a range that will apply. go to the wix site and type in your filter you are using now. They have an index that will show all brands of filters that fit your engine and its specs as well as the wix replacement.
You are also correct that any filter that meets your size, gasket size, thread and pressure relief valve specs will work. It is just easier to use established filters.

The bypass valve as mentioned and the gasket size. One critical thing is the existence of a bypass. Most GM products have the bypass in the filter mount. Filters made for them don't have a bypass at all.

There is doubt about how important the bypass is, but I have read reports of a filter blowing off as soon as a car with the wrong filter was driven away.

Larger doesn't mean more media. In the past, I cut open a number of PF 1177's and equivalents. They were all the same size. None of the other brands had over 2/3 as much media. Of course, more media may not mean better either since the quality of the media may not be the same. Some smaller filters have more media packed in than than larger ones.

So as long as you don't end up with no bypass at all, likely any filter you have room for and screws on is OK. Better? For the same price, why not?

Me? I am still hoping to find a made in America filter by an American company with a thread end bypass for my truck. I might even accept a downsize.

I see little need to go outside an OEM type filter UNLESS you are going to exceed the manufactures oil change recomendations. The additional oil from a larger filter does in my opinion contributs very little in overall performance. Most important is the construction, specifications and media used, Ed

I am one of those folks who use a bigger oil filter ... instead of pf47 I use a pf52 .... the reason I do this is becuase it is easier to get at the larger filter v. the smaller - - I own a 2003 Impala.

If it wasn't for that, I would use the smaller filter, Why?becuase I change my motor oil every 3 - 4,000 miles over the course of a 100,000 miles if I used the smaller filter I would save myself $60 in oil ($3.99 per qt). My suggestion, unles the threads match perfectly and the internals are the same .. it is not worth the additional capacity ...for that kind of detail I strongly recommend www.napafilters.com to make sure the numebers are correct ... MC ..

You forgot the for less than $3-$4 part.
Might as well stick to Super Techs...they're OK.
NAPA Silver might fit the bill too.
