a friend bought a 2008 craftsman mower with a 24 hp intek and the black briggs filter. what can i use as the replacement. I think a fl400 ,a st or other 3600 or a 3614 with these specs They're all 3/4-16 thread, 2.734"/2.430"/0.226" gasket.
oem filter is a Oil Filter - 492932S
Used for pressure lubricated engines (most Intek™ and Vanguard™ OHV engines and selected L-head twin cylinder engines). Contains oil filter (492932S).

Is my thinking correct to use a fl400 as a replacement .

Wix filter for this application is 57035:

I also found this bit ... but I'd double check the specs before you buy any of these:

"Briggs type" 3/4" X 16 threads 8-11 PSI Bypass
Gasket 2.734"OD 2.430"ID 0.226" thick

Length" Wix Purolator Hastings Kohler B&S Baldwin JD TEC MotorCraft AC Fram
2.3" 57035 NA LF503 2805001 492932 B7165 ? 36563 NA NA? NA
2.7" 51056 L35310 LF302 1205001 492056 B1410 AM125424 36262 NA PF2210 PH8172
3.4" 51348 L10241 LF157 5205002 491056 BT223 AM101207 ? FL793 PF53 PH3614

Sorry the spacing is kind of a mess. You might want to copy into Excel and parse it to get a proper cross-reference.

My buddy has the same LM and engine. I gave him a OEM Toyota 90915-YZZD3 filter from my V-6 Toyota Tacoma that I bought on sale for $2.99. It's a little longer but there was plenty of clearance. Worked just fine.

Yep, and the nice thing is, the new filter is longer, so it sticks out further, making it easier to get at come change time!!
