Oil Filters

I have a Craftsman rider with a Briggs & Stratton Intek Twin 21.5 OHV. The oil filter on this machine costs $10.00 (Carquest# 85056). I was told at the automotive part store that I could use another filter that has the same threads and the gasket is the same for about half the cost (Carquest# 85348). What is the difference in filters other than the part numbers and prices?

The automotive replacements are generally a little longer, if you have the room it's a good replacement.

FWIW-I have an 18.5 hp B&S vee twin,(I believe the same basic engine) and I had the same concern. I'm using Motorcraft fl-400s filters from Walmart. Sticks out almost to the mower cowl, but I have to deal with huge dust clouds, and I want all the protection I can get. $2.77 or so, plus tax, also sounds great to me.

I too use the Motorcraft FL400S on my Briggs ELS powered garden tractor. I have lots of room. Usually if you do not have room for the FL400S or that size filter you can get away with one of the Fram PH3614 size filters. Same filters only shorter. Look for a filter for a late 80s model Toyota pickup with the 22R engine. I would recommend the Super Tech ST3614 but I am not sold on the E-Core design or the clicker valve. Advanced Auto Parts has a pretty good Purolator filter in the AA3614 for $2.48 if economy is your thing. I bought several during the 2 for 1 sale. At $1.24 each it is hard to have too many filters when you change oil on 4 or 5 cars,some of which are not even yours.
