I listed this in the "Oil" section by mistake, so I'm adding it to the "filters" section as well.

I just changed my oil at 1400 miles - I used the Valvoline Synthetic I bought for the rebate that I never received. when I changed the filter, I was amazed at how tiny it was. I mean, this was really small. Is there a larger filter that will fit my car? If so, how much extra oil should I add? I usually use Napa Gold filters.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, it looks like it belongs on a motorcycle or a lawn tractor.

There are a number of larger cans with the same thread (3/4-16) that look like they may fit.

The basic requirements are an Anti-Drainback Valve, 14 PSI By-Pass Valve, 2 21/32" (67.5) OD, and 3 1/2 (88.9) Length. There's one application that's longer, and a number that are both longer and wider.

I made up a list of possible substitutes, but wound up buying a case each of the Mobil 1 and AC Delco Gold Ultraguard (no longer made) figuring a high-efficiency high-capacity filter filter that was a direct replacement would be easier to explain to Toyota in case of a problem under warranty.

Based on the results so far they seem to be doing the job despite the small size.

H-m-m-m-m. Interesting Specs. Where are they from?

Because I maintain a 98 Camry 4-cyl, I was interested. Others have reported they use the Motorcraft FL-400S. I am familiar with that one; I use it on my Jeep.

I looked up the specs for the stock filter and the equivalent for the Motorcraft at the Wix site.

THey give the following.

3/4-16 threads.

By-Pass Valve setting 8 - 11 psi for both.

Gasket O.D.'s : Stock (Wix 51396)= 2.475" = 2-15/32.
Oversize: (Wix 51516) = 2.734" = 2-23/32

Length: Stock = 3.402, Oversize = 4.828.

Odd that the stock model gasket size is that much different from the spec you quoted, but very close to the Oversize.

I haven't tried the Motorcraft on the Toyota; if it were my car I would . But it's a co-worker, and I'll leave it stock for her.

None of my reference material is here and I know Baldwin's website has easy-to-find specs.

Purolator's L14477 shows a 14-18 PSI bypass valve, 3.52 length, and 2.69 width. Your Motorcraft spec is a bit lower. Baldwin is using the Filter Manufacturers Council

recommendation.

The space into which this baby goes, assuming you're in the bypass ball park and the gasket will seal to the face of the filter mount, does not have a lot of extra width and past another inch or so may protrude below the oil pan. Putting a hole in the oil filter case with road debris could become a problem.

Baldwin has a nice little "spin-on filters by tap size" chart

that you can use to come up with candidates for an unauthorized substitution.

I noticed the small filter on the camry 2.4L. I also noticed that the 1.8 corolla has way more room for larger filters.

If you fit a larger filter, (try the camry v6 or tundra v8 filter 1st). I'm betting that the diameter is going to be a tight squeeze. If the larger toyota filter fits, then the longer Ford sized ones shouldn't be a problem.

I'm due for an oil change on the 2.4l soon. I'll make sure to have the two larger filters for fitment. I'm hoping that the FL400 fits because the added oil volume, filter cooling surface area, and filtering area, should make up for the lack of maintenance this vehicle will have in its life.

Here is a list of possible substitutes using the WIX numbers - readily crossable to other filters:

Wix 51394 this is the filter listed for your application - note the bypass valve setting differs from the Baldwin I mentioned Tuesday:
2.977 x 2.685 length x OD
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
Gasket 2.475 x 2.173 x 0.233

Wix 51396
3.402 x 2.685 length x OD
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
Gasket 2.475 x 2.173 x 0.233

Wix 51516
4.828 x 2.921 length x OD
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
gasket 2.734 x 2.430 x 0.226

[ this crosses to Fram PH3600, Purolator (P)L20195, AC/Delco PFL400A/SPFL400A, Mobil 1 M1-209, K&N HP-2009, Motorcraft FL400S]

Wix 51512
5.842 x 2.950 length x OD
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
gasket 2.734 x 2.430 x 0.226

Wix 51374
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
3.529 x 2.966 length x OD
gasket 2.740 x 2.370 x 0.275

Wix 51068
4.338 x 3.660 length x OD
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 8-11
gasket 2.834 x2.462 x 0.200

Once you settle on a filter, you can add whatever the normal filter calls for and - since it's small - top off the oil after running the engine until it's "full". Whatever that takes, add it to the next oil and filter change.
