This is pretty scary. I've opened up dozens of used oil filters for engines/equipment I've done oil changes on, and this is the first media failure I've found.

I'll be sticking with the blue OEM Subaru filters from now on.

Try the FRAM orange can or the TG. I think you will have better luck.

OCD about the OCOD.

"fuel contamination in NH"? What will you come up with next!?! LMAO!!
Oh, sorry. All fuel is perfect and uncontaminated - I forgot.

Yeah well, you make it sound like ALL gas in NH is bad.

I don't know where you're at in NH. But if you're near Nashua just drive south a few miles to Chelmsford for some good old Massachussetts gas. I'm sure it comes from a different place than NH gas.(sarcasm) I've driven throughout a lot of the U.S., including NH. Never had any problems with bad gas. My vehicles last a long time too, unlike "some" BITOGER'S.

Not to pick a fight here, but that's one of the dumbest statements I've read on here in a long, long time.

We all know that there are A LOT of very, very good aftermarket filters available and that in many, many cases the OE filters are inferior. While I don't think the use of a genuine Nissan OE filter would destroy my vehicle, I certainly feel more comfortable using a Royal Purple filter like I am now, or one of the K&N, DENSO, or Fram Ultra filters I have out in the garage cabinet.

I'm sure its the "gas" thats shortened all arco's cars to lasting 2 years and not the way he drag races them cold in the morning.

I've cut open that filter before and decided against it because of the poor media surface area, and cheap media. Definitely not a 7.5k mile filter IMO.

You would be better off with the Blue OEM, a Purolator 14612 (if you want to stay small and away from the exhaust), or a Purolator 14610 (for a slightly larger size).

I'm currently running the XG7317, which is just a tad bigger than the 6607 which was just dirt small like this wix.

Shhhh, Rand, don't bring logic or common sense into this

LOL... this forum would be boring without ARCO's experiences.

There's something in his car use/maintenance routine that we have yet to discover... it's still a mystery

a tad bigger, but seems to have considerable more media surface area. However, since it's a depth loaded media I suspect the 6607 is fine for reasonable OCIs.

I don't get too wrapped up in the subi specs to be honest. I'm just under 200K in my 1997 and I have used nothing but the cheapest filters I could find since 122K when I bought it.

Here is a WM $2.87 Super Tech filter with 10,144 miles on it:

And here is a different one with 11,984 miles on it:

I did just install a Napa Gold Wix filter that I plan to run for 12-14K over the winter with PP. I'll also post up the results of how the filter held up.

I think for extended drain I would have used a Gold or standard WIX filter but it shouldn't have had this problem anyway so call Wix and send in back to them so they can look at it. They have listened to me with complaints in the past and do respond with an answer.

My feelings too. Why should I go to the trouble to buy Mercedes filters, drive to dealer or mail order, when i get get *identical* Mann filters (air, cabin, and oil) from Amazon shipped free at a cheaper price?

Some OEM filters don't look so nice anymore either, Nissan for example.

sw99: Well, this is one of those, "shuts everyone up posts" because it shows some results in way that's hard to ignore or discount. To put it into context, could we know what oil is used and what the operational cycle is for the car?

i agree somewhat with the "use oem filters" statement in some applications. just to make up #'s here, but lets say there are 50 fords to evey 1 subaru on the road, so in the ford case i would use/assume an aftermarket filter will be speced the same, but in the subaru case, i wouldnt just assume that. i would do some research and make sure its up to oem specs. aftermarket suppliers will say a filter is the same, simply based on dimensions/fit, not filtering specs etc. just as some will buy a filter made by an aftermarket supplier based on the fact that the aftermarket supplier also made the oem filter. that does not automatically make it the exact same filter. think of this, when i go to napa and ask who makes their napa branded oil, they reply "its the same as valvoline", when infact, its bottled by ashland as is valvoline, yet it is different than valvioline in reality. as with my world (OPE), ive seen hydralic filters said to be direct cross' by aftermarket makers and when put to use, the mowers not even move, because the oem didnt have an adbv but the aftermarket did, or vise versa.

And, since there is a good amount of info on Toyota Nation about filters, we find that Toyota has used at least THREE different filter companies to make their "OEM" line, including Pure. It appears that "price considerations" may be at work from time to time. Now a lot of them come from Southeast Asia. Umm...good.

based on what? filtering aspects as speced by the auto maker? or based on location of the factory? or?

The DENSO-manufactured filters coming out of Thailand are pretty good though. While I haven't had any experience with the ones made specifically for Toyota, DENSO's aftermarket filters (i.e. the ones they call "First Time Fit") are very high quality. See cut open pics here.
