Some 2007 GM Ecotec 2.2 filters...

Does anyone know if there is a Flow Rate difference between the Delco and Wix vs. the other designs. 2nd picture down in the photos at top of this thread: if you look you will notice the Delco and Wix have a smaller diameter opening in the middle vs. the Supertech and FRAM (opening where anti dain back valve is mounted).

I recently compared a Purolator Premium Plus unit (15436) to the Delco PF457G and noticed the Purolator had the same larger diameter opening as the Supertech and Fram units.

I wonder if this would effect Flow Rate, or if it causes the OEM design (Wix, Delco) to function differently in some fashion vs. the others?

Good question LR. I've yet to figure out how exactly these filters work. The end with the plastic 'figers' snaps into the cover. This makes for handy removal/replacement. The cover has a spring loaded plate that seals against that end of the filter & forces the filter agianst the bottom of the housing once threaded down. The other end of the filter with the small 'teat' and O-ring sets into a small bore machined into the bottom of the cast housing. I'm not sure how sealing and bypassing is acheived. One major annoyance I've found with mine is a startup rattle on every cold start. I'm wondering if this filter housing empties of oil on every s/d.

Oh goody, just what I didn't need to hear.

The daughter is thinking of getting rid of ma's old Alero and going for one of these.

Shesh now I'll have to go to the dealership every other day for a month to prove or disprove this.

I haven't had a dry knock rattle out of my saturn ion ever.

I just bought the car, and it was serviced at the dealer, so I assume it was the delco filters.

I'm going to try a supertech filter when I change it this summer, will have to report back.

Thing is, I have no way to prove/disprove if it's an oil related noise. All I know is when you pull the oil filter, the oil filter housing is essentially empty. It's a quick ~2sec rattle noise right after the engine lights off. Could be piston slap, could be an accessory noise, dunno.

JTK, my 2007 HHR w/ 1100 miles did that, too. It almost feels like something in the 4T45E auto transmission that is doing it. When it does it, its just for a split second, feels like an gear momentarily moving. Usually only on cold starts. It did not feel like a dry lifter.

It hasn't done it since I changed oil @ 1000 miles. I can't account for why it ceased or why it did it in the first place.

Found this spec info on the K&N site about their version of the ecotec cartridge oil filter (bold emphasis mine):

HP-7000 Product Specifications
Product Style: Oil Filters
Height: 3.504 in (89 mm)
Outside Diameter: 2.402 in (61 mm)
Anti Drain Back Valve: No
Style: Cartridge
Weight: 0.1 lb (0.1 kg)
Product Box Length: 2.9 in (74 mm)
Product Box Width: 2.8 in (71 mm)
Product Box Height: 3.8 in (97 mm)

No anti-drainback valve so it would seem there is no attempt by the filters to keep oil in the filter housing. Therefore, type of filter should have no effect on start-up dry knock in the ecotec because there is no design intention for oil to be held in the housing. This is assuming that lack of anti-drainback valve is a ature of all cartridge filters for the ecotec. we have both seen that no useable volume of oil is in the filter hosuing when the cap is removed, and in light of the above it would appear this condition is by design.

Have been asking around town and am getting mixed reports on the 2.2 cold start rattle.

Seems to be while things are new, or low mileage, the rattle does not exist.

While I've put off buying a new one until next spring am wondering how much of this noise is oil related, as many of us have seen with other engines.

My HHR 2.2L has no start up rattle. The 4T45E automatic transaxle goes through some sort of spin-up or initialization or something though right after engine light off you can feel something engage in the trans and disengage in like 1/2 a second.

That is by design. Notice the tip of the oil filter with the o-ring on it? That plugs a hole at the bottom of the oil filter housing. When you remove the filter, that hole is no longer plugged and the oil drains out.

Hengst makes high quality european filters. If you cn get them for the price ofan AC delco filter, that is great...

Also check your local saab dealer. The filter for the saab 9-3 is the same, and from my experience, the saab dealers have VERY competitive prices on parts...

I have the 2.2L Ecotec in a different car than the cobalt... I have 98,600 miles on the engine.

Never replaced the filter cap or the filter cap's o ring. Every new filter came with a small o ring at the top.

I used FRAM for the beginning life, moved to STP at AutoZone till they got some weird filters from Bulgaria. Used some Napa Gold and Wix (from amsoil.com) filters but didn't like them. Finally settled on Purolator Premium Plus. Easiest to get for me because the store is 1 mile from my house. They have Purolator Premium Plus for $5 (was on sale for $2 last Sunday) and Purolator PureOne for much more (used them once or twice).

Didn't notice any knocking noise from the filter when I start up.

After 98,000 miles I'm looking at getting a new Filter Cap because the top edges of mine are starting to wear down from all the screw on/offs. One of these days I'm gunna strip that thing if I don't replace it soon. The plastic is just wearing away.

Yes, I've had several of my filters warp - or screw a little like described. But note: Only the FRAM filters did that. Haven't noticed warping on any other brand. Was told this was "normal" by the dealership and never experienced problems with it.

I bought an OEM filter for 5.90 from a Saturn dealer the other day. We'll see how this run goes with this and 5 qts of Kendall Synthetic Blend

Same price as a Purolater and only about 40 more cents than then Fram
