There's a difference between buying and storing spare parts for a vehicle verses filling the house with garbage like empty boxes and actual garbage piled to the ceiling that should have been thrown away like most of those "Hoarders" shows have.
Oil Filter Preservation Insanity?!

The last vehicle I parted with was a jeep GC. I had a number of filters, etc and some spare parts, and for unplanned reasons it departed from my possesion early. I took a picture of everything I had and posted it on the jeep forum - free - you pay shipping. Was gone instantly.
Hoarding would have been keeping that stuff.
Agreed. To each his own my friend. I just had to clean up a hoard house before so I’m now overly sensitive to clutter. It was neat and well organized but there was just a lot of stuff. I would never want do that to my wife and kids should I pass… it would be hard enough on them as is. My personal preference is all.

I don't see anything wrong with OP hording metal wire backed synthetic filters since its long confirmed here they're no longer being in production. If you see his channel, he's quite the car enthusiast like many of us here and wants the best protection possible for his investments. Also gives a piece of mind you don't have to play the game of shopping roulette when in the market for a new filter when that oil change comes up.
I recently did the same as well as I want the best protection for me and my family fleet of vehicles to use the filter that has been verified by a third party filtration laboratory test posted in this forum years ago. Hopefully when my filter supply is exhausted many years from now we get something better than the FRAM Ultra/Endurance. Filtration technology has come a long way 10 years ago.

I don't think anyone in this thread thinks he's doing anything "wrong", we're just giving our 2 bits.
BITOG is a safe space, where we can all let our greasy hair down and share our inner oily secrets.
Hoarding is legitimately a mental illness. That show actually makes me feel stress. I would be mean to those people and make them watch while I threw all their **** away... Or maybe rent a bobcat and shove it all into a pile and light it on fire. I mean they have to get over it one way or the other. Storing garbage.
Well, that would certainly be the healthy way to help hoarders....
And, of course someone with sadistic tendencies could never be considered mentally ill....
My wife has always thought I was a little crazy for lurking around this forum. She is undoubtedly correct.
If I could find some OG wire-backed Ultras or Titaniums for my machines, I'd buy them up too because I plan on keeping my vehicles that I have for a long time. Could always sell them to a BITOG filter maniac too, lol. I don't plan my life on the premise that something bad is going to happen and derail my plans ... can't live like that.
My wife watches that show all the time. It is fascinating. It is mostly based on trauma obviously and the irrational desire to fix that trauma with stuff. If you dump it all without their permission or buy-in it will cause more trauma and the cycle will start again. 90% of people (it was addressed in an episode) immediately return to the behavior without therapy. Imagine doing all that and then a few years later it is all back with a vengeance.

Very true. What you see on the various hoarding TV shows is typically a result of a mental illness.
There's nothing wrong with stocking up on stuff you know you will need, especially in today's world of supply chain disruptions and massive inflation. Buying parts for cars that one doesn't take care of would be concerning. The same goes for buying excessive quantities that would last way beyond the expected life of those vehicles (I guess that would be OK if they are sold off when those vehicles are gone, but that is where people can start to get in trouble).

If I had to wager, it is probably closer to a shopping addiction than a hoarding disorder for most. Looking for that endorphin rush that comes from finding a “good deal.” It is all about getting the gratification of a successful hunt.
Shopping addictions and hoarding disorders are very closely related in how they manifest. The main difference with shopping addictions is the items very often has value and are things you would find in every day households. Just to a ridiculous degree. There are episode of hoarders that are just like that. Where there is tons of really awesome stuff so it looked more like a collection than a hoard. It just got to the point where it was not helpful for the individual and it was becoming harmful and a large financial burden. And I think that’s the only thing that really matters. If it is hurting you or someone else… but unfortunately, like most things that require an intervention to fix, it’s not something the person affected by the affliction will be able to identify on their own. Very often they are hurting themselves or others and don’t think they are.
That could also be considered an affordable hobby for some people, depending on what's being bought and how much money they have to burn.
Absolutely. If you have the space, time and money it is not a problem at all.
If it starts to take over other aspects of one’s life and cause harm that is when it is a problem. Like say buying oil on sale but using grocery money to do so. Causing one to go hungry or be in overwhelming debt over it. Or if oil filters are spread all over one’s house causing habitability and family issue.
Jay Leno’s car collection comes to mind. It is amazing and seems to better his life since he has the resources and space to handle such a collection.
But what if unbeknownst to you the desiccant bag is punctured by the base plate and leaks directly inside of the filter which then gets inside of the engine… when will the insanity stop?
