Hi all. I'm new here ad it looks pretty cool. I found this wile looking for answers to the following question. Hope you can help.

I went into the local auto parts store to get stuff for an oil change for both of my vehicles. One is a 2001 Tahoe 2wd. The other is a 2003 GMC 1500Hd 4wd. The Tahoe has the 5.3 and the GMC has the 6.0 motor.

Here's the question;

In 2001 the book shows oil filter is the same for both engines ex: Fram PH3675

in 2003 the book shows oil filter is the same again but the new filter # PH3506

THe filter attachment plate that spins onto the block appears the same but the filter itself is considerably smaller than the one listed for the 2001 models.

Is ther any way to find out what the differences really are? I would think the larger the better.

ADDED NOTE: the filters currently installed on both vehicles was installed by the local oil stop and cross refrences to the 2001 callout. It however is physically larger than either of the fram models noted above. ???

Thanks, Eric

Welcome to BITOG

How can a 2001 book show the same filter number for a 2003 vehicle that has not been produced yet?

I think that he means that for year 2001 and 2003 from the same book ..the years spec different filters for both engines. Same engines with the same filters with only the year being different.

Wix doesn't know what a PH3506 is.

Use the longer filter for both and be happy. Baldwin may have an even longer one available ..or someone else may know of one. They have the same can and gasket size ...just one is shorter.

Here's one even slightly longer in WIX. It has a slightly bigger can diameter. If you've got anything in the way ..or a recessed mount, it wouldn't be for you.

UPC Number: 765809510494
Principal Application: GM Family of Cars (59-67)

Note that the gasket is slightly bigger in OD ..but ID is in line with your needs.

Fram changes their filter recomendations for cars all the time, it is strange. My old Mitsu used to use a 3950, then it changed to a 3593, now it says to use a 7317. For my newest Mitsu, Fram Online says to use 7317, but the book at the store says to use 3593. I think Fram has a problem with numbers. I don't get it.

I was just looking at this same topic yesterday! My 04 6 liter filter is almost the same as my 98 5.7 liter (both gmc) except the threads are metric on the 98 and sae on the 04 and the 98 is somewhat longer. I cant explain why gm went back to sae threading but I think the reason for the shorter length is to keep the filter out of harms way. Now my 97 cad filter (purolater) is the same as the 04 6 liter except its length is 4.1 in. long which is longer than the wix 3.4. I would assume you can use the cad filter on the 6.0 but again how exposed would the filter be to rocks etc. Now if you look at the wix filter no 51522 it would be the same but 4.5 in. long. It might be best to go with the 4.1 purolator. Mike
