My life was so much simpler before I came here. I was happy-go-lucky, using whatever oil and/or filter I came across. Life was good.

Then I came here.

Anyway, I have a couple different pieces of John-Deere Yanmar diesel powered equipment. Two of them use the same filter (WIX 51365/NAPA 1365) - both are 24 HP, and the other (33 HP) uses a 51064/1064. So, digging around at the WIX filter site, I discover that the 51365 is 20x1.5mm; 2.577" high; 2.685" OD; 2.475/2.173/0.223 gasket; 8-11 PSI bypass; 300 PSI burst; 9-11 GPM flow; 19 micron rating.
The 51064 is the same thread; a bit higher/fatter; same gasket; 16 bypass; 355 burst; everything else the same.

Obviously, it would make my stocking situation much simpler if I just used one filter for everything, assuming either one would physically fit under the hood.

Question - does 5 PSI bypass and 55 PSI burst make enough difference to worry about? I'd prefer to use the 51365, because there's a wider variety of filters out there that show up on the interchange charts. I could even use the Pure One - PL14612 or Mobil 1 M1-108 if I'm feeling flush.

Check the Purolator spec tab for the same number. Do it at Donaldson too. Their standard bypass rating is 12-16, iirc. It starts where WIX ends (8-11).

That should give you a reasonable perspective on how this would allegedly effect your choice. Some filters, for whatever reason, have specific bypass ratings (either low or high). See if your engines are some of them. It should be generic if the spec'd Wix and the spec'd Purolator have the standard bypass ratings. That would span well over 5 psi difference between the two (8-16 or whatever).

Thanks Gary.

It would be great if I could standardize a bit on that 1365 (or M1-108) filter.

While digging around at the Calsci http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Filter site, I found out that my brother's Honda ST1300 motorcycle also uses that 1365 filter. When I told him his bike took the same filter as his John-Deere 755 CUT, he about fell over.

Yes ..and it's equally shocking to the JD crowd who have been paying $10+ for JD badged filters, on their annual service trip, to find out that they could have grabbed a few filters at any of the chains that might have worked just fine.

The most comical one that I've run into here was a Delorean owner who wondered if the no-name filters that he bought on line were any good. He paid $9.95+ s&h for them. When he found out that he had a common 3/4-16 thread filter in a very common size ..available anywhere for $3-$6 it was a bit of a shock (and a relief too).

Just about everyone feels like they've been taken for a long ride for a long time ..but

I was one of those uninformed, too, till I came here. I bought a couple $12 Kohler 1205001's, then found the Puro 10241 and the various 3614's, and a pile of others, too, will work. $3.06 for a Puro 10241 at Advance Auto is kinda' hard to beat, y'know?

Although I didn't have a very diverse need (small or exotic stuff) ...this site really gave me an education on the mystique and facade that masks our view of a can diameter and a thread pitch ..and a gasket size
