A friend with a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX is looking for a larger Wix (or other high flow) filter than the standard Wix 51365. He passed along the specs on it and I see that it is quite small (2.577" in height x 2.685 in outer diameter). It looks like the thread size (20x1.5mm) and gasket size is the same as the standard Honda/Acura filter (Wix 51334)if that helps anyone. Thank you so much.

Looks like it is the same as the Nissan filter. He should be able to look up the application for the 2000 Maxima which will use the longer filter. Later Nissan's use the shorter version. The equivalant filters are Mobil 1-110, K&N HP-1010, Pure 1 HP 14620, Fram 7317-I think.
I havn't seen a shred of objective, independent testing evidence that indicates the small, modern filters used by the Asian automakers in any way compromises engine reliability or durability. I personally would feel uncomfortable experimenting with larger filter sizes, especially since the Asian automakers have set the world standard for reliability and durability in the first place.
I also haven't seen automakers give million mile warranties with their fluids and filters
Automakers make money selling cars and parts.
They'd go out of business if everything lasted forever.
When cost accountants and engineers quit playing with statistics comparing "initial OEM cost" and "warranty repair cost over the warranty period", I'll follow their recommendations.
We all will benefit from using better fluids/filters/maintenance intervals IF we want to keep the car for a long time.
Asian automakers haven't set any standard.
Preventative/preventive/predictive maintenance is the reason why ANY vehicle lasts as long as it does.

I agree 100%. I totally understand the fear in "experimenting" with replacement parts which could influence reliability and performance in an expensive "investment". But I'll weigh in on the side of unDummy. A larger filter with more filter media will give a measure of filtering reserve which may not be necessary. This may (and probably will) cut back on periods of bypass. This bypass cuses unfiltered oil and even adds dirt from the filter to enter the oil gallery and bearing. So really no one has been able to prove bigger is not better.
There are applications where it is known larger is direct replacement for smaller. All GM vehicles can take the larger PF-52 vs the smaller PF 47. Some Nissan dealerships openly recommend the larger Maxima filter for all applicable Nissan engines.
Lastly-you must do your homework and insure the replacement filter has the same bypasss setpoint abd that the filter will take the pressure. Obviously the filter must not interfere with its surroundings. Ity also goes with saying that the mounting sonnection must be correct.

I'll add another vote in favor of the larger filter. On a turbocharged car like the WRX, additional oil capacity is nice. Also, if that turbo uses oil film/oil pressure in any way to support the shaft (as the ones on VW/Audi cars do), you want oil pressure at the bearing to be as consistent as possible. The larger filter will help ensure this.
