Oil filter gasket blew out/Major engine damage

I agree it appears the oil suddenly leaked out. I think a deformed gasket due to being installed dry would leak from the outset, and it wouldn't have the appearance of being forced out like that. With the filter on tight, it will be hard to say the lube place made a mistake. I suppose you have to wait for the independent lab to inspect the filter and gasket for dimensional problems, like an improperly formed thread or other obstruction not letting it seat properly.

bingo, that was our policy when i worked at sears.

we actually had a double gasket situation at work today. a newer Mazda 6 v6 came in for an oil change. the tech took off the old filter, gasket was on it, put on a new one and filled it with oil, no leaks. then when the porter went to wash the car it shot oil out. we pushed it onto a lift. it was double gasketed, however the old filter had a gasket on it. so it had been double gasketed for however long and didnt leak at all.

Did you tell the customer about it?

I just had a situation the other day which, I ordered new filters from RockAuto. The filters were like $1.50 for a friends's car. Thought what a steal. Got them and installed one. It was a Pro-Tec not, to be confused with the generic types from Pep Boys(Pro-Line). These are Made in China. Turned on car and when she left the garage. Trail of black. Told her to stop and back up. Looked and loosened the filter. Saw the gasket hanging on the oil spout to filter. Put another filter on. Refilled 3 and 3/4 qts. Her car only takes 4qts. Double checked and made sure to warm up engine and then rev engine to make sure everything okay. Had to clean up the spilled mess all over the driveway. That was fun. Oil filter change took 5 mins. Cleaning up the diarrhea mess in garage and driveway took 1 and 1/2 hours. Never had this happen before. Has anyone heard of this filter(Pro-Tec) before? Will try to post pics.

Looks like the gasket just failed. Poor quality gasket or excessive pressure. Doesnt seeem to be an installer error judging from the pics and your comments

I also couldn't resist getting one when I ordered some other things (incl a Wix) from Rock Auto. Mine (Honda size) says Made in England on the box. It is not confidence inspiring, and I was never going to put it on my car. Especially now after hearing your story.

me, no. i work in parts and get to sit back and laugh at the shenanigans. she knew cause she was waiting for the car. i knew cause she was cute and the door from parts to the shop has tinted windows.

I think the filter wasn't tight enough, unless its just a really poor gasket seat design on the filter.

The Subaru mechanic says it felt tight? but how can he tell with the chunk of gasket jamming it tight, its what I see in those pictures.

Ive always liked the O ring type gaskets, the way they seat theres little chance of a blow out. Especially with a high revving high oil pressure engine.

Good luck on finding a party willing to admit fault.
This is one of those situations when a law suit is the only way.

After 3500 miles, quickie lube place ain't going to admit fault.

Engine failing due to no oil, not Subaru's fault. Even if it was a OEM filter, if the dealer didn't install it, I doubt they would cover it.

I am afraid you might be stuck.

Oil Pressure Gauge? Well if you had one like my Dodge it probably wouldn't help you anyway. It is electronic stays at the same pressure unless an extreme failure occurrs.

Let's wait and see what the lab inspection says about the filter. There could be something wrong with it. It might have been the wrong one, or labeled wrong, or something.

I had a gasket blow out many years ago on my, ahemm...Gremlin. I shut-down, thinking I had a major engine failure. After collecting a lot of tools and thinking I had to pull the pan for a pan gasket, I found the filter gasket split.

Yesterday, I grabbed a NAPA Silver for the Ranger I did a complementary change on for a friend. The gasket fell off the can as I removed it from the box. I reset it and proceded with the job. Now I am a little wary about it.

looks like a double gasket, but why is everything so [censored] dry under there if a gasket blew?

I see the filter is made in Korea. Korean products tend to be better than Chinese, however for filters I like to stick with made in Germany or U.S.A.. Paying a little extra for the NAPA Gold seems worth it when you see this kind of filter failure.

Maybe there is hope when the lab gets the results.

These are the pics of the oil filter that I was inquiring about. Has anyone heard of this manufacturer?
