This is for my brothers car. The factory Mann filters are like a fluffy fleece type material and Mercedes specs these for the 10,000 mile oil change intervals and stipulates that cheaper paper filters will not work for the long oil change intervals.

Does anyone know if any of the readily available aftermarket brands for Mercedes are of this fluffy fleece type material? Such as a Mobil 1 Extended Performance?

Thanks.

Wix 57078 appears to be glass.

Rockauto has it for $11.40, which means the NAPA will probably charge you double that. However, the catalog does say the filter can be either glass or paper, so be sure to check which one you are getting.

I use regular paper filters from Bosch, Hengst, Mahle, Mann, Fram ... in '00 E430 for 12-13k miles OCI. When I changed the filter, It was in excellent shape and I think it can be used for another 12k miles without problem. But I have many filters I bought on sale few years ago so that I replaced with a new one.

I don't think expensive Fleece filter is needed for 10-12k miles OCI in a good/clean MB engine. If the filter is intended to be used for 18-20k miles OCI, then may be Fleece filters are better choice.

Does he change the oil himself ? If he has the tool, tell him to remove the filter housing cap and take a look at the filter to see if he needs Fleece filter or not.

PS Kragen has Pentius paper oil filter for MB, take a look to see the quality construction of the filter.

I changed the oil once in it and used a Purolator, but upon further research, Mercedes says that for the 10,000 mile oil changes, the paper ones will break down. Who knows; the one I took out was a standard paper Mann and it looked fine after 10,000 miles.

That Wix looks good Mike - the Napa Golds are $13 bucks, but on the Napa website, they don't look like that one - they are standard paper.

Or, I might just order a few of the Mann extended drain filters as I found them for $13 bucks online.

Really! I'll have to look for those.

Yeah, PelicanParts has them for $12.25. Shipping is free if you order $75 worth of stuff.

I have a fleece filter here made by Mann Germany and it looks identical to the above Wix. Wix must buy them from Mann and rebadge. I don't know why they call them fleece as they are not fluffy, but more glassy fiber as previously was stated. I prefer to do shorter oil changes than 10K but always with the fleece filter, the savings are insignificant, over a year. The 10k oil change is for ideal conditions IMO. My wife drives less than 5K per year on E320 and a once a year change is done. If I used a paper filter it would mean about a $3 savings per oil change. I think it is more of a game to try and save money, rather than anything meaningful. An S500 is a $70K car, it seems prudent to use the best.

The WIX filters tend to be re-badged Mann filters from what I have seen. I personally just go with Mann fleece filters for the ML500.

Quote from MB oil recommendation for newer engines:

"MB sheet 229.5 approved oils; "MB Longlife Service Oils"
for passenger cars with gas and diesel engines with extended drain intervals beyond 229.3 oils, to 30,000 km, min 1.8% fuel saving, first oils introduced summer 2002. ACEA A3 B4. 229.5 engine oils must be used with fleece oil filter designed for use with 229.5 engine oils. "

Fleece oil filter is needed if OCI is up to 30,000 km (18,750 miles). But, since the cost of 1 year OCI with fleece oil filter is only about $5-6 more than paper filter, it is a good idea to use it to sleep well at night.

Yeah, if you're driving a "5" series Merc, $$ aren't a problem..

Not when it's a 2000 with 100,000 miles.

Not to offend anyone, but I think it's the biggest p.o.s. I've ever seen. The radio doesn't work and no one can find a replacement that will work. The entire front end had to be replaced after he bought it. There's a leak in the washer fluid reservoir - we replaced all the o-rings and what not and it still leaks out!

Granted, it's 10 years old, but I'd seriously question owning a Benz unless I absolutely had the money to be able to take it to a dealer for work - $$$$$$$$

I think that I'm lucky to own 2000 E-class without much problems the last 5-6 years. The maintenance cost is high specially tires and brake pads, I have to change those every other year and they are expensive.

To be honest, Mercedes quality has been going downhill since 1996. I took the ML500 to a car wash yesterday, and water was leaking in from the windscreen sealant. I find this unacceptable for a 4 year old, babied truck with 62,000 original kilometres (38,750 miles) on the clock. And that's completely ignoring the price tag that was covered in 2005.

Mercedes apparently invested millions to upgrade the assembly plant in Alabama, where the ML Series trucks are built, and the newer ones do seem to be of better quality...but I'm not sure by how much. My favourite Mercedes remains the W126 560 SEL
