What do you guys run for oil filters on your 7th Gen Civics? I am thinking of going with a Pure One PL 14610, but Baldwin makes a 1/2" longer one (B1431). Although I just got the car and have to leave the factory fill in for awhile before I move to Mobil 1 0w20.

Thanks
Paul

jrhawk,
I run Baldwin 1431 on my '03 Civic EX 1.7L vtec. Absolutely impressed with the Baldwin. I doubt that I'll ever change to another filter brand. I've used OEM Honda filter, Fram X2 7317, and the K&N 1010 filter early on when car was new. Currently coming up on 6,000 miles on current oil (over 19k miles on car) and the oil is still light honey colored. Using 1 Qt of German Castrol 0w30 mixed with 3 Qts. Mobil 1 0w20. Also has Maintenance dose of 1oz. of Lube Control every 1,500 miles (currently has 4 oz. LC in the sump). I'd suggest going with Baldwin...but I'm just biased towards the Baldwins...Good Luck on your choice.

RedLine 5-w20 and mobil 1 m1-110 filter. I'll have a used oil analysis of my redline shortly, next change its going to blackstone and terry. I tried the K&N oil filter and wasn't horribly impressed, but if I can find baldwins maybe I'll give a go. anyone had any luck finding GC in san diego?

heyheylbj,

I too am using Red Line 5W-20 and the M1-110 filter. I'm happy with this combo in my '03 EX but I'll be interested in seeing your UOA. I've got 10k on my car and anything you can share from Terry would be appreciated.

Are you using a different intake?

I haven't looked for GC in San Diego but it isn't hard find in the OC!

thanks guys, I plan on ordering a bunch of Baldwin filters for my Firehawk this winter, so I may order some for my Civic as well. GreenElixer, I also plan on doing the LC/FP treatment in this car too as soon as I get the factory fill out, so thanks for the info on quantities....now I know where to start with that

How long did you leave your factory fill in? I am thinking about dumping it at 3,000 miles and then going to Mobil 1 0w20. Did you ever run Mobil 1 0w20 by itself and compared it to your GC/Mobil 1 brew?

Paul

jrhawk,
I dumped factory fill at 2.5k miles. I went w/Fram X2 7317 filter and Valvoline All-Climate 5w20 (cheapest I could find for break-in and dump) for 2.5k - 5.0k miles. Dumped it at 5.0k and went with Amsoil S2k 0w30 and K&N 1010 filter. MPG went down about 2 or 3 points with the 30W and the butt dyno said it ran a little rough, so I knew I should switch back to 20W. At 9.0k (4.0k on oil) I dumped oil and went with Baldwin B1402 Filter and my first GC 0w30 and Mobil 1 0w20 brew to 14k. I since found the B1431 over-sized filter to replace the B1402 and the Civic EX really likes the GC/Mobil 1 brew (mpg went back up and smooth as silk idle), so I stuck with it. I'll do my first UOA on this brew at 20k (6k on oil, 14k-20k). This last change on this brew, I added the LC on a maintenance dose of 1 oz. per 1.5k miles. I hope to get 16.0k on this oil interval. At 30.0k miles I'll probably go all Mobil 1 0w20 or try another brew such as 1 Qt of Mobil 1 Racing 0w30 w/ 3 Qts of Mobil 1 0w20 or 1 Qt of Amsoil 5w30 w/ 3 Qts of Mobil 1 0w20. I only like to add the 1 Qt of 30W just as my personal little security blanky...but since I can no longer aquire my favorite GC elixer anymore, I may be forced off of my 30W bottle and go all 4 Qts of Mobil 1 0w20. I don't have any doubt that the 0w20 would do a fantastic job!! More than anything...I think it's the engine design that allows it to be so good on the oil to begin with! Lastly, I've heard the Mobil 1R 0w30 has lots of extra adds in it so I thought the mix with the 0w20 would be a great choice to try next in the Civic! The Baldwin filter choice came from reading the many posts here on BITOG and also from the filter study that was posted on here. I think they compare and / or even beat many of the $10.00 filters such as K&N, Amsoil, or Fram X2 in build quality, flow, and filtration at under half of the cost...plus I love the bright red can

. So, hope this helps!

jrhawk,
Oh, I forgot to mention...when I get to 20k, the oil filter gets changed w/ 1/2 Qt. of Mobil 1 0w20 top-off added. Then I will be back on track w/ my typical 5.0k oil filter change interval w/both of my vehicles. Oil Filter change will occur again at 25.0k w/ 1/2 Qt top-off and then again at full oil change at 30.0k miles. Take care of that Civic, man! It's a great little car!
