Oil Filter Flow Question ..

with a p1 my 318 ticks for about 4 seconds on cold startup when i used to use the classic it was quiet like most other filters.. I stopped using purolater.

As has been said a hundred times, on an engine with a positive displacement oil pump, you can't tell if one filter flows better than another by a simple oil gauge. You would either need a delta-p setup, or if you can run the engine up to near red line with the same oil at the same temperature in both cased and put the pump in to pressure relief, then you might see a slight difference in max oil pressure.

I've ran 5 different oil filter brands on my Z06, have recorded oil pressure vs oil temperature vs engine RPM, and I can see any difference between them all.

BTW - the FU flows and filters about as good any anything available today - even better than the PureOne did, and that's one reason I like the Ultra.


By delta p setup, do you mean something that measures how often the filter (or integrated bypass setup) goes into bypass?
 
This topic will be around for quite some time. Just like the Fram and SOPUS horror stories.

I have seen the K&N filter being marketed as being the "high flow" filter in Jeep aftermarket catalogues.

Their marketing seems to be working.

I would try an OEM filter.
 
OEM is a great thought but the company that makes many of them has tearing media and is sort of down the tubes quality wise.
 
ZeeOSix, I wasn't thinking about the true meaning of filter bypass. Brain gas explosion.
Sorry about the repeated statement/question. So at what point down the road will this forum cease to be, because all of the questions have been answered?

Unless a filter is being used for VERY extended OCIs, being used on an engine notorious for requiring a high-flow filter, or a modified oil system that requires high flow filters, I wouldn't worry about it.

Mopar filters are tear free and aren't like Purolator Classic/ P1s.

I mean the pressure difference across the filter (ie, delta-P), which is the pressure just before the filter minus the pressure just after the filter.

You could measure the delta-p by using an upstream and down stream pressure sensor and subtracting the two, or use a sensor that reads delta-p directly. Jim Allen here has a delta-p setup on his truck and did some real world driving testing to monitor filter delta-p under various conditions.

The media of the MO-90 and PL14670 are the exact same. Aside from the bypass, they have a lot more similarities than they do differences. And neither one of those models have ever failed me.

Only someone who works for Purolator would really know that or not.

Or, the other option that I use BOTH of those filters on a regular basis and cut them open after every use for comparison.

But no, it is much more likely that I am a purolator plant. That seems like the pot calling the kettle black.

You can't tell the true media composition by just looking at it, especially after use and the media is soaked with oil.

If I'm a Fram plant, I guess I'm still waiting for my first paycheck and case of FUs. LoL

That's what's strange with your claim that you can see oil pressure differences with different filters at idle, because as mentioned before if the sensor is after the filter it just can't see the difference if the oil pump is positive displacement.
 
All filters flow about the same. There is no way to determine if the rise in oil pressure can be attributed to the filter or not. A rise in oil pressure is more likely to be caused by changing to a lighter weight than changing filter brands.

People act like certain filters are restrictive and can damage your engine or rob your motor of lubrication. It's nonsense. Oil flows freely through any media, whether cellulose, synthetic or a blend thereof.
 
Its like clockwork the two gauges i was talking about both can tell between the classic and pure one i am under the assumption that the p1 restricts flow slightly more than the classic i can also see a big difference when changing my oil and filter. Night and day.
