Since we just got this mower and just finished the 4th mow, I'm going to change it this weekend with Rotella T6 5W-40 and a filter. What is the cross reference for the filter on this? Preferably slightly oversized, if possible. PureONE would be my preferred filter in this case.

Do you have a 492932 on there right now? if you put an s after that its the short one. I would check out the briggs filters. I dont know if its true but on the side of some it says for the high heat applications for air cooled engines or something like that. Maybe they are special compared to the other brands. i do remember seeing 25 micron somewhere and i think it was for the 492932 number. If that helps with anything.

maybe all the filters made for that engine are the same just a different paint job. Whats your filter number in briggs #'s?

Read my post on the pic thread you posted when you bought your mower.

Just a general comment here...I'd be hesitant to use cross-referenced filters if your application is otherwise covered in the online (or paper) catalogs and you can get a precise recommendation from a filter manufacturer. Sometimes details get lost in a cross-referenced translation, sorta speak. To sum up with a hypothetical conversation, "Yeah, that cross-referenced filter will screw on OK, but this other one -- the one actually recommended by the filter maker -- works better because..."

+1 to that.

Motorcraft FL400's or equivalent are the ideal alternative for Briggs and Kohler V-twins. People have gone this route for years, provided you've got the room under the hood. That's all I ever used on my Kohler V-twins.

+2 and more to that.

The yellow B&S filter is no better than the black one and internally they resemble the Champion line of filters. The Motorcraft FL400S has all the same specs including bypass pressure as the B&S filter.

It's all about the room. I'm running a FL400S on my Scag ZT with the 26hp Briggs, but there is no room on my neighbor's Ferris ZT with the same engine to run anything but the short filter.
