Oil filter bypass spring. Coiled vs flat.

The filter I cut open a couple weeks ago had the flat strap spring. It was flat and allowing the media to move around inside the can.

It did not appear to have any spring like abilities.

So if that flat strap gets pushed enough that the cartridge can allow oil to bypass will the strap return to its previous state? Or once pushed on will it not spring back rendering the filter useless?

Seems to me that the coiled spring is a better choice as it can compress and extend as needed

What filter was this? Must be talking about the leaf spring. The leaf spring has nothing to do with the bypass valve, except house the bypass valve in most cases. If the leaf spring gets permanently bent to where the guts of the filter are loose, it will not "spring back". Yes, a coil spring is better, and will not bend and get a permanent deformation.
