The oil filter on my car is mounted horizontal. I want to mount the filter vertical. What adapter if any could I screw on the base plate to have the filter mount vertical?
It is a Zx2 Zetec that takes the FL-400s style filter
Thanks,
Dusty

you can pre-fill, just dont have it on the verge of overflowing, i have a filter or two like this, i fill all the way and then let it obsorb. once it pretty much obsorbed i fill the filter up again about 1/3 of the way and repeat.. it wont all obsorb.. i then fairly quickly screw it on.. ive only lost a handfull of drops ever doing this. I also agree i wouldnt modify the factory setup.

What do you mean by "cleaner changes"? Pre-filling the filter actually can allow contaminants/insols from the oil get into the engine unfiltered. It is better not to pre-fill. It is not worth changing the design of the engine.

If you're careful, there shouldn't be any contamination introduced while filling a new filter with new oil.

I'll bet the reason is usually space and packaging issues. If it is really a design reason, I am all ears why it can't be changed. I've installed many remotes on SBC and Pontiac V8 with no problems.

That is true but sometimes oil will have insols. in the oil from the "factory" either from the stock itself, malabsorbtion of the additive pack or plastics/foil from the bottling process. Just something to think about when you are trying to go the extra mile to protect your engine.

But, aren't these 'contaminants' the same ones that you dump into the engine when adding/changing oil? I've been prefilling oil filters for many decades...what sort of a clumsy oaf introduces contaminants when prefilling? If such exists, I'll bet they're not members here.

I think you are misunderstanding me HallMark. I am not saying anyone is purposely or "clumsily" putting these things into their oil or engine on purpose. These are just things that can get in the engine and they are filtered out. If you prefill they will circulate unfiltered. That is why they don't prefill on jobsites from drums.

There has been some talk about this, there is no specification for cleanliness of new oil. Prefilling the filter allows some of that oil to circulate before being filtered so IF there are any contaminants in the oil they are imidiatley pumped into the engine.

My Ecotec cartridge can't be prefilled so I stopped worrying about the can on the G6. When I was prefilling I used a similar method as mentioned above for the horizonaly mounted filter on the Saturn, filled and let it soak in probably twice. Then at least it was part filled and still didn't make a mess.

To the OP, I'm with the train of thought that it's location is based more on space & packaging. I can't see relocating it affecting it's effectivness. I believe there are lots of relocation kits in use. Just make sure it's in a safe place.
