A long time customer droped off several alum pieces for weld repair this morning. I noticed in the back of his Chevy truck a jug of Amsoil. When he came into my shop he saw my M1 0-20 jug and we started talking oil. He said he changes every 3-5K and of course I told him I changed every 10K. He was really surprised my engines held up as well as they do, so naturally I opened the hood and and let him do a oil fill hole check in the Focus, and of course it's like new clean. He really was suprised and said he must be changing way to soon, and I completely agreed.

Never know where your next oil conversation will be.

So far in my area i have not found anybody who has a genuine interest in oil. Most view their car as a simple appliance.

Even those who consider themselves "car people" have very little understanding or interest in oils.

Not necessarily, some Amsoil users use it because it is perceived to be the best, not because it can extend their intervals.

I believe all Amsoil is synthetic.

Extending OCI's is coming along. When I was in high school in the late 50's and early 60's the service intervals for a lot of drivers was really short. I worked at a gas station and we often changed oil at 2k miles along with checking the points, condenser and valve clearances, greasing all the fittings, sometimes repacking the wheel bearings and checking other fluid levels. This short interval was especially true for cars that did not have an oil filter. We had a book of charts for the grease fittings to make sure we did not miss any of them. Service in those days was a lot more work than it is today.
 
Bingo, OneEyeJack. A lot of people forget what the "good old days" were really like. Could you imagine the cost of a 2000 mile service these days if it included valve clearances, lots of grease fittings, and bearing repacks?
 
Here in NY it is just jerk off after jerk off that won't let you have a conversation. Their way is always the best way

Back then I used QS and was surprised when I pulled the VC for a 50K valve clearence adjustment on a Slant 6. Even changing oil every 2k still resulted in a lot of sludge. Much easier today.

Most people I talk to here don't even know what engine they have in their car let alone what oil is in it.

I get the same... can't tell me what engine, what tires... but most can tell me what auto maker and color.
