Hi All,

My Toyota Sienna 2006 has 70,000 miles, and the current fill is Amsoil OE 5w30. My drive patterns are mostly cold start, which means short trips. Today, I noticed that the oil is not full and it needs from 0.5 to 1 litre to be added. The mileage on this oil is 4200 miles. The question is does anyone has the same issue before? and if I change the 5w30 grade to either 5w20 or 0w20 will overcome this issue? also does it help if I use different types of oil or not (syn or non-syn) or (Mobil1 or Pennzoil)?

Your advice in this matter is highly appreciated.

So, in 4,200 miles, you've used between 0.5 and 1.0 liters?

That's hardly an issue. All cars use oil to some degree...the manufacturers don't consider it excessive until it's greater than 1.0 Liters/600 miles...

My '06 Corolla uses about that much, down 0.7 Qt at 5,000 when it gets changed...and I am very happy with that...

That is not an amount to be concerned with. Having said that, what brand oil were you using before, and how much oil did you use then? If it is less I'd change back rather than wait and hope you use less oil after a few oil changes with the current brand. JMO

^^^exactly as stated above. Sometimes a simple change of brand or type can make a huge difference. Every car can actually be unique this way.

Usage Sounds "normal" given the driving pattern. That does not mean the rings are unstuck though. That's a big range on how far the oil is reported down, though - one is a bit below the halfway mark between lines, then, the other is below the FILL line - if toyota here follows somewhat standard 1L marking intervals.

Have u run synthetic from day 1? Was the vehicle bought new? You shouldn't ever have to add oil to any car, sounds like most people here have leaking from switching to a synthetic and just keep adding which is no big deal I guess but not how I would treat my stuff. Oil usage is not normal and means you have a bad gasket somewhere or are burning it/ running it to long, I would switch to a good old conventional oil run it 3-4 k and see how that helps. I have a 02 alero with 160k on it and it doesn't have a single leak or burn oil because the car always used good old Dino oil.

Thats not enough to be concerned over. Lots of engines if used cold and short trips go through more oil then if driven 50 miles a trip etc. You can change to synthetic anytime in today's engines. Old wives tale about leaks and such. All engines use some oil. Some just more then others and trying to top such is useless and time wasting.

Agreed, though if my '07 Grand Marquis uses any between 5K OCI I can't see it, still on full at change time... My '98 that has same mileage(52K) uses a qt in 5K mi, figure that's normal...

About the idea that synthetics cause leaks: there is a grain of truth to that myth.

Back in the days when synth oils were first being introduced to the consumer, there were issues with seal compatibility, however those issues were solved early on.

Secondly, it is also true that in an engine that has been poorly maintained and has sludged-up, hardened seals, the improved detergent additives in synthetic oil can clean up those seals, which may then begin to weep a bit. This usually abates after the oil's seal conditioners rejuvenate the seals.

.947 liters for every 1,448 kilometers is considered normal per industry standards [1 quart every 900 miles].

I used what was on sale but mostly Mobil1 5W30. However, I did not notice any problem.

Short trips over 4200 miles may be time for new oil. You may be getting fuel contamination.

How many miles is your typical daily drive?
How long did it take to reach 4200 miles?

You may be best served changing your oil with a name-brand dino every 3K.

It takes five months to reach 4200 miles, and the daily drive is vary. I might drive 20 miles on one day, and 0 miles on the other.

When you said name-brand dino, what do you consider name-brand dino?
