Oil consumption under load

My 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan currently has just short of 48K Miles. I purchased the vehicle new. It was using 1/2-1 Qt of dino oil in about 1200 miles.
I changed to Pennzoil Platinum and consumption dropped to about a half quart in 3000 miles. A great improvement.
I am on my second run of Penn Plat. At 1700 miles into this oil change, I again used about 3/4ths of a quart of oil. However, 700 miles of this was towing a 1780 lb. pop-up camper. I enough oil to bring this up to full. It did not use any oil on the 700 mile return trip.
Is is safe to assume that the comsumption was a combination of mileage and tow load? I was feeling pretty good about the reduced lack of consumption on my last OCI and was hopeful that Penn Plat was the answer to my problem. Of course I will continue to monitor the oil levels but thought that it wouldn't hurt to get input from you guys.
Thanks in advance.

I am spec'd for 5w20. I have been running 5w30 the last few oil changes. Not that I distrust 5w20 oils, but with the consumption issues I was having, I figured a little thicker couldn't hurt.

My brother-in-law was having a similar issue with a Dodge van (w/ approx. the same miles). He switched to a HM oil and the consumption seemed to stop. You may want to give Maxlife or another of the high mileage oils a try.

Or just simply go to a 10w30...10-4

Moving to a high mileage synthetic may not be a bad idea. Since you desire a synthetic, try the Valvoline Maxlife synthetic next. Use it for a couple of OCIs. Give it time to do it's job.
