Oil Consumption- Long trip

Good evening,

I went on vacation last week to South Carolina and changed my oil the weekend before the trip. The trip was 700+ miles each way.

I drove the interstates and/or rural state highways overnight reaching 70mph-80mph depending on traffic flow and speed limit. I had full luggage, 2 passengers and blasting AC as it was hot out. I drove 14 hours straight.

On the road trip home this past weekend it was 100+ degrees...I even idled the motor when filling for gas to keep the AC on. I'm not even sure I shut the car off once in those 14 hours.

I checked my oil today just to check and it was down a quart ...at the ADD line on the dipstick. This car has never consumed any oil except when it was brand new it used less than a quart during break-in. It consumed a quart of oil in 1 week/1500 miles on this trip alone.

I exclusively used Mobil 1 in my Mazda but last oil change used Kendall as I got a few cases on the cheap.

Can the oil consumption be blamed on switching oil brands, hot temperatures, AC, high RPMs and/or very hot weather?

Could be a combination of switching oil and the hot weather but, I suspect the oil switch was mostly to blame as I have seen this mentioned before. I for one am not a beliver in randomly switching brands. I pick one oil that meets my vehicle specs and my driving and OCI and stick with that oil. Ed

IMO, yes...especially switching brands and high RPM driving...

All the above can cause it. There are too many variables to say definitively, so I think it would be prudent to monitor the situation and see what you can figure out.

Is your PCV system OK?
In any event, high speed driving may put the ring packs over the edge where oil control can go whacky.
And who knows about the cheap oil you got?

Sheesh it burned a quart under a major trip, one that I'm sure kept the oil temps as high as they possibly get while not on the autobahn?!

I bet if you went up a grade or two on the next trip like this it would burn less. But what you're describing sounds perfectly acceptable given the conditions.

Should be nothing wrong with Kendall.
Add the quart and keep on going.
Maybe just a fluke, and maybe related to changing brands of oil.
Others have remarked upon this.
Continue using the Kendall and see how it goes.

It it possible that the oil was not filled up for the full mark when it was changed. It may be possible that you checked your oil after your car ran for such a long distance and not all oil has settled back to the pan. That combined with the fact that you ran it for such a long time with the A/C on probably caused it to burned some. It would switch back to M1 or just top it off and do a oil change 4k miles from now. My Corolla uses oil and I just add more every 2k at a 1/4 quart rate. It just leaks a little but not enough to leave a mark on the driveway. Since I only change oil once or twice a year and do put 20k miles on it annually, it constantly get fresh oil added monthly.

You said earler fill was Mobil 1 but, this fill was Kendall. You didn't say what Kendell !!!!
