It seems like my 04 neon has decreased its oil consumption. Im wondering if its the oil or if its finally "fully broke in." I know a lot say that engines dont really need break in, but you have to wonder.

It has consistantly used about 1 qt in 5000 miles. The consumption is completly linear, at slightly more than 1/4 qt per 1000 miles. The oil was first changed at 1800 miles with conventional, then at 2500 with conventional. At the 5000 mile oil change I switched to synthetic. Since then there has been on synthetic oil, changed every 5000 miles. Except between mileage 15000 and 20000, I wanted to try something with conventional oil.

The oil used over the time has mostly been Mobil 1 5w30. There was two oil changes where I used Syntec 5w30, one oil change where I used Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and one oil change with GC. (These are all previous changes) The car rolled over 45000 miles so it was time to change the oil. I saw PP was pretty cheap at Walmart ($19/5qt, $4/qt) so I got it. Oil consumption has always been constant no matter what oil was used, Mobil 1, GC, PP or regular Syntec.

Now I have 1200 miles since that oil change and it has only used a small fraction of oil, which I dont consider such precision to be possible on a dipstick so it hasnt really used any oil. I expect some because my little air/oil separator has some oil in it. My driving has been the same since last august.

Any thoughts, opinions or ideas. Dont worry Im not complaining, just a little surprised.

To early to tell but its either PP related or you have a head leak adding coolant at 1/4 qt per 1000 miles.

And I would surly hope that a car with 46000 mile on it would have a head leak. I didnt check my coolant though, maybe i will and see what its level is at.

I was wondering if it was PP related, but I keep telling my self that I have used PP before and had normal oil consumption for this car.

I just went out and checked my coolant level. I checked the bottle and the system. Both are full.

I guess I should have stated that my neon is the 2.0L, non-HO motor. I know the HO (magnum) motor in the r/t's like to go through some oil moreso than mine does. I havent heard about SRT's using oil, but it wouldnt surprise me.

My mother's 97 plymouth breeze (2.0L 132 hp engine) had the head gasket go at about 45k miles... However, it was a major oil loss overboard when it occurred.

We switched to M1 shortly thereafter (5w30) and the first few changes it did loose some. Didnt do any real analysis of use to mileage like you, but it did loose about 1/2-3/4 of a quart in 3-4k miles. SInce then it has completely stopped!

Such a phenomenon is common in the MB diesel world... Many folks would switch form regular HDEOs to Mobil 1 15w-50 back in the day. Many would note a fair amount of consumption at the start... by 10-20k into using M1, the consumption would go away and the engine would run great. It was documented multiple times!

I switched from Mobil 1 5w30 where I had the exact same consumption (about 1 qt. per 5000 miles) to Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and have had nearly zero consumption. This is a 2005 Scion Xa with just now 30,000 miles.

the 96's were a little different, they came with a bad head gasket. the head gaskets now are A LOT better than the one on the 96's.

Thanks for the personal experience. I just think its crazy that it just all of a sudden stopped. Even though i have used PP in the past it didnt stop. Ill definetly have to monitor it more. Maybe go back to M1 or GC on the next change for a back to back comparison.

well, i took a trip, 340 or so miles each way. its now up to a half a qt of consumption in 2000 miles since the oil change. i know that extended highway trips use a little more. ill have to see how the next 3000 miles go, if it uses oil or not.
