I was checking the oil in both my cars the other day (2004 Grand Am 3.4 V6 and 2004 Explorer 4.0 V6) and noticed something...odd. The oil in the Grand Am was a light brown, and the Explorer was a dark (almost dirty) brown. The thing is, the Grand Am has ~4500 miles on GC (and AC Delco Ultraguard Gold filter) and the Explorer has ~2700 on Mobil Clean 5000 (and Motorcraft filter). So, I've been trying to figure why, and I'm wondering if:

A. The Grand Am is easier on oil than the Explorer
B. The GC is holding up better (??)
C. The Mobil 5000 is cleaning the leftovers from the previous OCI
D. The AC Delco filter is filtering better than the Motorcraft. I know the MC's are good filters, but I have the Ultraguard Gold, which I've heard filters very, very well.

Both cars ran Mobil 1 5w30 and Mobil 1 filter for 5K last OCI. Both cars see a fair mix of city/highway miles, although my car (the GA) sees slightly more highway miles. Think that has anything to do with it? Sorry if somemthing like this has been beaten to death, but I really don't have time to do a search at this very moment...

What say you BITOG'ers?

Two different engines, two different oils. They are as likely to color differently as they are to color the same....
