I was just changing my oil today and i accidentally added about a tablespoon of 80w-90 gear oil to my crankcase. the rest is 5w-20 conventional with a total oil capacity of 5.5 quarts. how bad of a screw up is this? Do i need to drain out all the new oil or will that little amount of gear oil really make a difference?

i had poured some heavy gear oil in an old (5w-20) quart bottle so i could use my transfer pump to change my rear differential fluid. of course my writing had come off and i totally forgot when it came time to change the oil....

-_-

i may just drain it again and refill...i'll probably leave the filter tho

Don't bother draining your current fill until you get to your usual OCI. It's not hurting anything.

That little quantity isn't going to do any harm...but I can see that you're going to go OCD on us...

thanks, i probably won't run it very long anyway as it is the "rinse" phase of an auto-rx treatment. anyway, i'm not going to change the oil again...but i will if i hear any funky noises coming from the engine in the future.

i won't go OCD on ya....

it is reassuring to have you guys tell me it is okay though

Of course there is the slight chance it will cause your engine to fall out when a semi truck is following and his truck will knock your engine to the ends of the earth. While its now clean inside because of the Auto-Rx, the engine is never found.

I had something very similar happen to me last year, and I chose to leave everything alone and run it as-is. Then all of a sudden, 8 months later, I ran over a broken pair of scissors in the roadway and ruined a tire.

Take from that what you want, but if it were me, I'd drain that puppy and I mean FAST!!

Isn't that a requirement to to register here on BITOG???

Wonder how many of us submitted fake documents to slip by the OCD requirement???

A small amount is a total non issue... I've never used any in a engine but have loaded up the late 70s Ford power rack & pinion with gear lube when they got cranky, made 'em work like new...
