I'm looking for some opinions so please chime in.

I just picked up an 05 VW with a 1.8T engine. The car was built in 10/2004. The car had 200 miles on it when I picked it up. So I'm cruising around on 8 month old oil. VW recommends 5k oci, which is what I followed without incident in my previous 1.8T, including the first change. Considering this stuff is 8 months old and the car has obviously been sitting around for a while should I change the oil now? Wait till 1,000 miles? Or go the full recommended 5,000 miles? I had good results with GC in my previous 1.8T and that's what's going in this one when I change the oil.

From a fellow VW owner, I suggest you leave it in, at least until 3-4k miles, if you will now be driving it frequently. The factory fill should have been 5w40 synthetic. You would be wasting it by dumping it now.

But, if you really, really can't stand to leave it in there, I can't imagine that it would hurt anything besides your wallet to change it now.

FWIW, I just cleaned my VW 1.8T engine today. I had forgotten how clean that things looks when its not covered in dust, dirt, grime, etc. I love my VW 1.8T.

I also have an 05 VW 1.8T. How do you like the engine? I love my 1.8T. I am running Amsoil's 5W-40 Euro and the car loves it!!!! Be careful with that turbo though and do not just shut the car down. You have to let it cool down before you turn off the car. Enjoy the car and remember...
1. Use synthetic oil
2. Use stock filters

brianpavlovic,
I agree with you up to point #2. We all know our 1.8T motors will self-destruct if you don't use a Mobil 1 filter.

Here's the thing, before I bought my 1.8T GLI, I never heard of Amsoil or even Mobil's high Fe numbers. Now, I am more knowledgeable about oil and the amsoil seems to make my engine run quieter and my fuel mileage went up!!!!! Keep the oil in there until 5,000 miles or if it really bothers you, do the drip test. Pull out the dipstick and drip one or two globules of oil on a white business card and set it aside for one day. Look at it the next day. The more "schmootz" in the oil, the bigger the area of the black spot will be. Help me out wayne!!!

p.s. If you're wondering how long the engine will last, remember where the design came from and how long it has been running!!!!!!!!! Take of her and she will take care of you!!!!!

Well, after thinking about it over the weekend I'm going to leave the oil in for a few thousand miles and then change it.

This is the second car I've owned with a 1.8T engine so I know all about letting the turbo cool down and using synthetic oil. I stuck with 5k OCI's, synthetic oil (M1 0W-40, Amsoil 5W-40 and finally GC) and stock oil filters. I had zero problems with my first 1.8T. It's a great engine!
