Oil change Dilemma

1999 Mercury Sable, Vulcan engine. Was using regular 10w30 oil, no oil burn, no oil leaks. Changed to Castrol Edge synthetic oil - now my engine making noises as soon as I switched to Castrol Edge. Sounds like piston rods are quietly knocking. Engine sounds loose, maybe tappet noise also. Engine never made these noises before I put the Castrol in it. Also I put 5w30 in it because that is what I thought the manufacture recommended. Have since found out the recommendation is really 5W-20. Isn’t that even thinner? Did I make a mistake? The engine has 128K on it. Should I go back to regular oil before I ruin my engine?

if they say to use it,,do it the 5w20,,,ford has had lots of damanged engines because of thicker oil useage

Some oils damp noise better than other oils. Stick with what you have for this oil change, then try something else next time.

Ya as long as you have oil pressure I wouldn't sweat it.

Prove it...

The supposedly tighter clearance is mostly B/S, I know my '98 Grand Marquis 4.6L that 5-W30 is recommended has same piston and bearing clearance recommended as the '02 engines that 5W-20 is the choice(yes I checked)...
