Oil change cost

That seems excessive even by Quicklube pricing standards, I'd expect even full syn would generally be right around $100 at an expensive express lube place.

It sounds a bit high to me. I knew that oil changes were climbing up in price but I haven't heard that they were much over $100(5 qts & filter). She/you can most likely print coupons for oil change discounts at the quick lube establishments if you have these quick lube shops in your area.

Try searching for a local Valvoline Instant Oil Change center near her residence. Here is a link to some current coupons and the location finder.

VIOC Oil Change Centers

For a "quickie lube" franchise, they have relatively high standards and quality control. I think their MSRP for a full synthetic oil and filter change service is ~$75.

Just Saturday had my sisters CX5 oil changed and tires rotated at the Ford/Mazda dealer. Price was $109.00 but here is what made me mad. The car sounded different when I took off. Then had neglected to put the top back on the air filter. I put it back and that fixed that. Next thing was the TPS started going off. Got home and put my trusty Ryobi tire pump on the tires and 3 tires were at 22.5 lbs and one was at 35.5. The door sticker calls for 34 lbs per tire. Anyhow, the monkeys did not do a good job. Maybe your Mom's monkeys are smarter and charge more.

What all is included? Just an oil change, or does that include tire rotation, etc, etc?

If it's just an oil change, yes, that's excessive. I just recently learned that a synthetic oil change at a Jiffy Lube for my truck (7.5qts) is just over $100.

I assume you checked the oil level ?
But you have to wonder what kind/weight oil they put in if all that was screwed up

My Mazda dealer charges $110. That includes tire rotation and a check of all fluids, brakes, suspension and chassis etc. They do a video of the inspection which is sent to my iPhone as I sit in the waiting area.

The price difference may be due to local and state regulations and things like disposal and environmental fees.

I do my own oil changes. I recently changed the oil & filter on my Mazda CX 5 using Mobil 1 EP oil and a Mazda OEM filter. The materials cost just under $40 with tax and/or shipping.

Mechanics don't work cheaply these days. So I would expect the dealer to charge around $100 for an oil & filter change using synthetic oil. $144 is high unless said service also includes checking and topping off all fluids, tire pressures and other prescribed inspections according to the owners manual. And it's still pretty high.

I believe your average cost for a 0w20, 4-5qt oil change is about $100 these days. Dealers are often less, or offer coupons to get you in the door for up-sells.

Without knowing the details, I'd say $144 is high for just an oil change.

The original reason I started doing my own OCI's and joined BITOG. My new Mazda dealership charges $130 for an oil change and filter. Even at inflated prices I can do the same change for under $30. I did that using Mobil 1.
