In about two months I will put the summer oil change in The Beast. The issue is, what filter should I use? I have a filter stash I put together from sales, freebies, and giveaways. They range from a ghastly-looking STP E-Core to some fine high-end filters like a Bosch Distance + or a Mobil Extended Performance, or a Fram Extended Guard. I scrounged a Pure One (the prettiest filter of them all), some Toyota OEM filters, and a Microguard. Right now I am thinking of the overside Fram OCOD PH8A. I know it is an OCOD but it's huge. The OCOD looks pretty. The STP E-Core is like Sinead O'Connor; it looks downright scary. The Distance Plus and Mobil Extended Performance filters look downright sturdy and feel that way too. Maybe one of the Distance+ filters will do as then I can run one filter with two oil changes. Ah, decisions, decisions...As [censored] said in the play Oliver Twist, "I think I'd better think it out again." What would you do?

Use the oldest one in your stash...I date them with a Sharpie when I put them on the shelf...

Ditch the OCOD! It'll cost you more in concern & doubt that what it's worth or what you saved!

The OCOD PH8A is the oldest. But I am wondering if I should use the best filters first. Who knows if this car will exist three years down the road? Maybe I should save the lower end filters as backups only. By the way, I have always had good luck with OCOD's, but this is the last one I have.

I date all my filters when I get them, but use the best filter first. I cut open an OCOD, just got a couple of Microguard's for my Astro at the O'Rielly sale. I will likely never use them, but if I get in a pinch I have them. My Sienna will be getting a P1 when it comes time for the annual oil change in April. IMO give "the beast" a great filter. I would go with the Distance + and run it two OCI's...

Because you are questioning the longevity of the car, I would use up the expensive ones first, then trickle down to the cheaper ones if you still have the car. Hopefully, you'll get a chance to use that over-sized PH8a. Then go with Sinead O'Connor last.

Just because it is big doesn't mean it will protect better. Size doesn't matter. Look at Honda oem oil filter, they are small. toyota filter yzzf1 are small. 64 mm.

Maybe you missed the message of my post. I wasn't telling the man to use the PH8a first (even though he wants to). I was saying go ahead and use up the 'better' filters first (included the Toyota OEM) and hopefully he'll have the car long enough to actually use the oversize one. While it may or may not protect better, I don't see any point of not using it if that's what's next in line.

The Honda S2000 takes a larger oil filter than all the other Hondas. So yes size does matter. ROD

The car will last forever, except that I live in the L.A. area. Car repairs are expensive; this car is old and the next impact may total it even though it is in top condition. I have only had a single at fault accident in my life. There are too many insane drivers in my area and I see a wreck about every six days. The filters are kept in a compartment in a refrigerator at about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. They will last twenty years if I need them to.

Good ol' Alhambra haha. Yes I know what you mean. I'm up there a few times a week, people are nuts.

The people driving down here by LAX are crazy too, the stupid things they do, never cease to amaze me. I wouldn't use an OCOD on any engine I own. stick with a good filter, they don't cost much more.

I agree with keeping junky filters as a back-up or emergency type of thing. You know what is good. Why put junk on your vehicle if you have quality in your hands.

I can tell you there are alot of good chinese restaurants in alhambra. I used to live around san gabriel. now back to oil filter I purchased 10 oem toyota oil filter for $35.95, free s/h around december. You have to look for deal on ebay. I recommend you use only toyota oem oil filter. There isn't any filter better than toyota oem.

See if your local walmart has the XG8A Gold and black is far prettier than the ugly yellow duckling.
